"Then you did that on purpose!"

I've always loved how no answer can be the right answer. I've always wondered if they train DI's to be that quick witted with the comebacks, or if it's innate.

We had a guy when I went through "basic" who was a total shit magnet... A lightning rod... A superconductor.  Everywhere we went, the cadre would yell "CHUBBS!  WHERE'S CHUBBS?". You'd hear this meek voice from the back of the formation,  "Sir, I am here!"

"CHUBBS!  WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?"

Again, with the meek voice, "Sir, I scored a fourteen hundred on the scholastic aptitude test!"

We almost gave him a blanket party one night.

After you're in basic a while(once you stop being terrified of them), you realize that some of the drill instructors are truly gifted actors. They all have routines worked out and have got a lot of practice harassing new joes.

Loved the movie, mainly because I'm a huge fan of the book that it's (mostly) based on.  So many of the scenes, after the boot camp portion, are almost word for word.

If anyone's interested:  http://www.amazon.com/Dispatches-Michael-Herr/dp/0679735259

It is.

There are also some things lifted from a book called "Run between the raindrops"

I remember having to explain a quote to my buddy at work. He would quote the guy in the chopper. I don't remember it exactly, but it is along the lines of killing women and children. The part where he said it was easy, you don't lead them as much. After I explained how you have to lead a shot on a moving target, but women and children don't run as fast, so you don't have to lead them as much, his face was priceless.

Anyone who runs is a VC. Anyone who stands still is a well disciplined VC.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Private Pyle, Private Joker is your new squad leader, and you WILL bunk with him! He'll teach you everything; he'll teach you how to pee!

Private Gomer Pyle: Sir, aye aye, sir!

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Private Joker, he's silly and he's ignorant, but he's got guts and guts is enough. Now you two ladies carry on!

He also did a lot of the running scenes with a bunch of broken ribs, courtesy of a Jeep accident. A tough motherfucker...

His audition tape featured him howling verbal abuse at an imagined line of recruits for a solid fifteen minutes as oranges and tennis balls are thrown at him. He never broke character or repeated himself.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has seen the first half of the movie more times than the second half . I wouldn't say I dislike the second half, but between R. Lee Ermey being R. Lee Ermey and Private Pyle slowly going crazy, the first half is epic.

JOKER: Why should we do a story about you?

DOORGUNNER: 'Cause I'm so fucking good! That ain't no shit neither. I've done got me one hundred and fifty-seven dead gooks killed. And fifty water buffaloes, too. Them're all certified.

JOKER: Any women or children?

DOORGUNNER: Sometimes.

JOKER: How can you shoot women and children?

DOORGUNNER: Easy. You just don't lead 'em so much. Ain't war hell?

Me too. I was there in '77. Every time I watch it I just grin REAL wide because every line, every syllable, every nuance is the real deal. The only difference in my experience was there was NO public abuse of recruits. That's not to say one or two shitbirds didn't get "counseled" in the shower, out of sight of the rest of the platoon. Otherwise, it was spot-on.

They are well trained and some do rehearse and plan things out. My FIL, as I said was a DI, and we have talked at length. When he picked up a new platoon, he would get 10-12 buddies to come over for the "meet and greet". I thought it was hell with 3 DIs. I can't imagine 10-12 running barking orders and screaming. The Series Commander walked in one day, let them finish and pulled him in the DI hut and made him stop.

Than man has stories...He was a DI in the mid-late 60s. Yes, he thumped recruits. They sent him to MTU to mellow him out. He did 2 twos in Nam, including Tet. I truly believe he was trying to weed out non-hackers to keep them from getting killed in Vietnam.
Sammich maker says he was one tough SOB to have for a Dad. I can see it. Her brother joined the Navy, which I think disappointed him a little. I get mad props from him for being a Jarhead.

As well as the great lines I like the scenes where Pyle is sitting on the crates sucking his thumb and the rest of the platoon are doing suicide drills or following everyone else with his pants around his ankles and holding his rifle over the shoulder by the barrel.

My fav vietnam era movies in this order:

Deer Hunter
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
We were soldiers
Full Metal Jacket

They all look very good. FMJ is great, but it's disturbing comedy genre. Sometimes you don't know whether to laugh or cry. Man, it looks good on bluray. The second part is disturbing enough.
