...and geez, what a monster piece of architecture.
Not my pics. Note the lack of snow.

There aren't really any good pics to show the scale, but it's an imposing structure to say the least.

They have closed many prisons in Michigan in the past decade. The justice system found it hard to stay bin business by locking up their bestest customers.

Despite additions to the old prison, it was evident that eventually a
new prison would need to be built. In 1924, a new prison with a capacity
of 5,280 inmates was built three miles (5 km) north of the city in Blackman Township.
In 1926, 625 prisoners were moved from the old prison to cell block one
of the new penitentiary. The name of the prison was changed to the
State Prison of Southern Michigan in 1935. The new prison was built on
3,469 acres (14.04 km2) with an enclosed area of 57.6 acres (233,000 m2).
The prison was enclosed by a concrete wall that was 33.9 feet (10.3 m)
high. The wall stretched around the entire prison, with parts joined
together at the ends of the cell houses. There were 12 watch towers and
16 cellblocks. Inmates were housed in 2,090 inside cells, 2,072 medium
security cells, 1,312 outside cells, and 268 quarantine
and detention cells, for a total of 5,742 cells. All of the cells were
10 feet (3.0 m) long, by 6 feet (1.8 m) wide, by 7 ½ feet high. ]

I think that's the Michigan State Prison at Milan.

I believe there's actually two of them there (one on each side of 23).

For the most part. Parts of it are admin stuff and the outlying facilities are still open.

If so, that is pretty lame as some states are ordered to release cons because of over crowding when their rooms just waiting.

Prior to entering the main prison, everything that could have been used as a weapon or contraband by the inmates was taken from me in case we were attacked or taken hostage during the tour.

John Norman Collins, who was convicted of murdering numerous college girls from Eastern Michigan University and U of M, was in population and pointed out to me too.

I went to junior high school in Jackson, MI.  We had a teacher there that always told the class miscreants that "you're going to end up on Cooper Street if you don't get your act together."

My mother took me out there once and we made a stop in the prison gift shop.  Apparently the merchandise was made my the inmates.  She bought me a mini billy club that I kept in my fishing tackle box for whacking fish that wouldn't stay still for unhooking.

Grew up there and everyone I told that I was from Jackson would always say isn't that where the prison is?  Hell I was chatting a girl up in Pirmasens Germany and even she said, "I've heard of this place they have a huge prison."  Conversation killer

What's uncomfortable is to tour a local jail as a police academy student...  walking into a pod with sixty inmates when you're in your criminal justice polo

BTDT.

Not as an academy, but as a CJ student. That being said, only one person asked who I was.

Inmate: Hey, who's that guy?

Deputy: He's our intern.

Inmate: Oh, that's cool. *Walks away*

Boring jail I guess.

My roommate was incarcerated there in 1989-90 for eighteen months.  He and two of our friends shot some mailboxes with a .22 pistol ( I wrote about it in the 'worst roommates' thread).  One of the bullets went through the window of a house but no one was hit.  One of the friends testified in exchange for a plea deal and got 20 hours of community service.  The other two went to jail.  My roommate got eighteen months at Jackson.  First week there he saw a guy get his testicles sliced off in the showers.  Dave told me he stopped shaving and bathing and wiping his ass to deter rape.  I moved away and never saw him again but kept in touch with a few mutual friends.  He committed suicide in 1993, he'd been a straight-A student in high school ( our valedictorian) and in college.  After he got out he just drank and lived in his folk's house.  Never got his life together after prison.  Not condoning what he did, just amazed how far he fell in life after a supremely stupid mistake.
