Its easy to fool dogs, just pretend to thrown something and watch them chase it, it takes a few seconds for them to realize you didn't really throw anything.

That's one of the differences between wolves and dogs. Dogs will look for help readily from people when frustrated, while wolves, even ones that live with people, generally won't.

I had a trick I'd sometimes play on dags. Several times I'd throw them a ball that they retrieve to me. Occasionally I'd throw the ball so high that for a couple of seconds they would look back to me wondering where the ball was. Then just in front of them the ball would land, sometimes startling them.
