From the NYT article:
Russia’s fighter jets are, for now at least, conducting nearly as many strikes in a typical day against rebel troops opposing the government of President Bashar al-Assad as the American-led coalition targeting the Islamic State has been carrying out each month this year.

That cockpit looks about as state of the art as an F-15A model cockpit from the mid 1970s.

I got to look in an ANG F15 cockpit a few weeks ago at the air races. It looked awfully primitive and really uncomfortable.

I thought the entire cockpit was boosted away from the air frame like in the B-1.

Nope I'm wrong. There seems to be lots of pictures and videos of successful SU34 ejections

B-1B has 4 separate ejection seats, not a capsule like the B-1A or F-111 design.

Reading through those comments apparently the kitchen galley/toilet on the Su-34 is a misnomer, where the kitchen is a thermos can bolted on the wall and the toilet is this lovely item stored behind one of the seats. That posted image of the toilet may be from a strategic bomber or a zero-g toilet on one of the space stations. Also the cockpit has been updated from the original layout.

This image seems to indicate the only thing behind the cockpit is a bulkhead and the entry hatch going through the nosewheel gear bay.

The updated cockpit displays, kitchen and toilet is shown at about 6:30 in this video:

Its like a mini B-1 bomber. Built for long duration and comfort. Has a toilet in the back and you can stand up in the cockpit to stretch out for long missions. It flies and handles just like a regular fighter jet.

Correct...

The Flanker is their counter to the F-15.

I think that's an Su-24 cockpit, not an Su-34 cockpit (not that the Fullback's cockpit is much better, it does at least have multi-function displays).

If I wasn't on my phone I'd insert some pictures of the B-1B's cockpit upgrade. Looks really nice and modern.  Years above these Russian cockpits....

For reference...

F-15E front seat

F-15E back seat

Pretty good representative of a F-22 cockpit
