My girlfriend has a 9 year old Hyundai Tiburon with 30,000 miles on it. The paint is going bad, and I suggested that she look into getting it repainted since it has such low miles. Two different shops in our area quoted 4,000 to 5,000 for a decent paint job. Seriously?
When did prices for getting a car painted go so sky high? Does that sound right to you guys? |

It's been steadily climbing. I just had quotes for a 79 Trans Am between 12k and 15k.

Seems high, unless the bid is to strip it and respray. Stripping paint is terribly labor intensive. Scuff and paint not so much.

No one here knows whats "going bad" I'm guessing its a lot more than just a re spray. BTW good paint jobs are triple what you got quoted lol

A decent paint job costs. $5K isn't unusual at all.
You can't just mask the car off and spray it, well you can, some places do, but you don't get factory results that way. |

And 4-5k is cheap. Want "budget" crap do the sanding and prep yourself and just run to Maaco. I have 2 cars that could use paint once I am done with mechanical mods. One is a 95 Ford where the paint is flaking(common on any 10-20year old white ford). So that car really needs to be stripped of all old paint before new paint is put down. The prep work is going to kill me even though the white repaint can be done for cheap. My 2005 needs paint. Had been rear ended once in the past and the car was resprayed decently but I am losing clear in a spot or two. Can probably get away with sanding to base coat and filling chips to then respray/reclear. |

Are you putting the trim back on? Are you striping the car? Are you priming the car? Are you wet sanding it and polishing it? What color are you painting it? If you do everything but paint run it by Macco and have them squirt it, they have the best painters in the game because they can't afford to screw up. They make money on the prep work and polishing not the painting. $4k doesn't sound outrageous for what your asking if you don't plan on doing anything but dropping it off and picking it up. |

Most shops I know don't even do full paint jobs. They are set up to do collision repair.
Full paint jobs around here range from Maaco shit job for $900-$1300. Then on to real pro shops. Around $4k to start. Then you have the high end stuff that would start at around $8k I know one guy who does resto work, his paint jobs start around 10k, but the results are show car quality. |

All depends on the quality. Mostly likely that is pulling trim, etc and doing it right.
You should be able to get half of that quote if they don't paint like all the areas, such as inside the door jams etc. |

$2 - $3K last I looked for a 50's classic type car; good, but not showroom quality; i.e. no color sanding.

Stripping and painting a car is very labor intensive. You're also probably paying for a nice paintjob. Is there a warranty included?
The other alternative is Maaco or Earl Scheib, but you get what you pay for.... |

I have a friend who does high end paintjobs. He told me if I want a bargain to let the bikers paint it ..... twice then bring it to him to wet sand.

Being in an area with intense UV light will destroy a car's paint in no time flat. Add in a cheap car like a Hyundai or Kia, or cars notorious for shit paint like Nissan and well... There ya go. |

See what it would cost if you did all the prep work. Lots of labor hours I bet are in that.
And paint has went through the roof because of new EPA regs. The new non lead paint is harder to make. See how much it costs for the new LineX vehicle paint  You wouldn't have to worry about scratches.

Doesn't sound too high. More work goes into a full paint job than most people realize. Even on the same color. If the shop is doing it right there's all sorts of shit to R&I. Trim, moldings etc etc. Probably both bumper covers and possibly all the glass. Have to blow the doors apart. The list goes on and on. At least that's how we would do it. If the jambs are getting done that opens up a whole other mess of shit to R&I. Not to mention all the materials have gotten higher than a cats ass.

a basic repaint should run around $3-4k at your normal body shop ETA: you didnt mention it but are you talking a color change?
its one thing if they are just having to sand down a clear coat its another if the paint has degraded down past the base coat and maybe even has some rust repair if you really want to check out what it takes to get classic cars painted "show quality"
$10k is pretty common I helped a guy get classic car insurance on his '57 chevy I honestly thought he was lying when he said the paint was $18k nope.... I saw the invoice

That Hyundai isn't worth the quote for new paint.
Painting a vehicle isn't cheap that is for sure. My wholesale guy at our dealership said minimum would be $2k...unless you went really cheap with MAACO. |

I painted my truck cab for $70 of spray paint. I sanded it down, wiped it clean, taped it off and painted it in my driveway flat gun metal grey.
On my old mustang, yeah that was $6,500... |

Why is it getting so expensive?
A couple of years ago I got a quote for a full color change on a project truck. $4,000. That was just minimal body work and paint, I was going to deliver them a bare shell (no drivetrain, interior, handles, glass etc). I thought that was acceptable. Same paint job would cost me ~$8,000 now. Is it labor costs, insurance or EPA that is driving the price spike? Most factory car paint is utter crap nowadays too, making it worse. I see lots of 4-5 year old cars with blown clearcoat on them (Hondas, Nissans and Toyota trucks seem to be the most common). Probably explains the rise in popularity of things like dip and vinyl wraps. |
