I would love to do that also.

But from what I understand Wales has the most castles to explore (my brother-in-law was born in Wales).

The guy who owned that castle was gay and had his throat slit or some shit at another one of his castles. Ive been there and you have to take a tour, no running around in secret passages.

Really cool place. Be sure to walk up and don't take the horse and carriage. Make sure to go to the bridge up on the mountain.

Beautiful, but not a "vinttage" medieval castle. I believe that one was built in the 1800's as a throwback.

Actually that one doesn't have many stories to tell. It was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria who only spent 11 nights in it before he died in 1886. It was almost immediately opened to the public for tours. It's in Hohenschwangau, Bavaria very close to the Austrian border.

We visited several years ago when we were stationed in Italy.

Neuschwanstein Castle is awesome. Been there twice. IIRC, the castle isn't even finished but the parts that you do see are wonderful. Would love to be there for a Christmas concert.

"Der Koni" was indeed murdered at Lake Starnberg in mysterious circumstances. That whole area is gorgeous.

You're thinking of this guy: Ludwig II

He "drowned" in an improbably shallow amount of water. Never lived to finish Herrenchiemsee, either. Still bare brick.

its in bavaria, neuschwanstein castle. its not very historic, as it was built around 1860...... germany has castles 1000 years old, that were built on the ruins of 1000 year old castles. neuschwanstein is however, the prettiest, and its what disney based their castle on. iv been in several castles on the rhein river, and each one, big or small is really cool, and interesting.

I toured it years ago as well. As said above, you really don't see much on the tour. The tour guides told us it's mainly a shell and much of the interior is unfinished.

Some silly trivia, below is LANDGRAFENSCHLOSS, Butzbach. It is where the Hessian Mercenaries trained that fought for the British during our (United States) revolution. Some 200 years later I would be trained there, the US Army used it for PLDC (WLC now), it has since been turned back over to the Germans.

And a few miles away is Schloss Munzenburg, which is built on top of the ruins of Roman fortifications.

Nuremburg Castle is another interesting place to visit.................... Eppelein von Gailingen, a local Robin Hood type, was rumored to have escaped hanging when his horse leapt from the castle walls into the moat, and horseshoe imprints can be seen in the top of the wall. The place is supposed to be haunted as well

Went to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau right next door in the 80's.
Will try to find my pics.

ETA:

Sorry for the spots. Lost a lot of pics due to flood.
This is in the small town at the base of Neuschwanstein.
You either took a ride up, or walked. We being Infantry, hoofed it.

All kinds of trails around the castle. This is the back of the castle.

Buddy and I tried to get the money shot like in the OP, but there is no way on foot. They must rappel down for that one.

This is one of the King's bedrooms. Their were many. One had holes in the ceiling in which lanterns would be lit in the room above
to simulate the night sky when the King went to bed. This is also a postcard shot. They hated flash photography in the castle.
