That stuff was wholly unique in taste and texture . . . even as a PALEO guy today (mostly), I'd love me some Roman Meal toast (dripping with butter), or on a high-stacked deli-sandwhich!
I can't help but wonder what the carb content was, per slice! LOL Probably low, compared to today's . . . . Anyway, just reminiscing & wondering . . ! |

I remember it.
I also remember rotary phones, so there's that. |

That's the only bread my granddad would eat.

It was the only bread Mom would buy, if she didn't have time to make her own.
Good stuff Maynard!!! Whole grain, when Wonderbread was the std. It actually had some flavor to it, and ruined me. Nothing like Peanut Butter and Honey on Roman meal. |

Ate a lot of it growing up. It hasn't been in the stores around here for a long time.

Oh, I remember.
6AM Mom's making Dad's lunch on kitchen counter. 2 slices Roman Meal...check 2 slices O-S-C-A-R M-E-Y-E-R bologna...check Heavy Mayo...check 2 slices Kraft godammit American cheese...check ... Then she'd whip up a couple eggs and dunk that awesome bread, and turn into french toast for me and my brother. |
|
Only thing my Mom bought growing up. I would LUST for simple white Wonder bread. |
|
Now I'm craving Roman Meal, Kraft Singles and Hellman's Mayo...

Hell, I grew up with a party line phone. When I was a kid, there were some teenage girls on our line. I used to unscrew/remove the microphone part of our phone and listen to them when I was bored. |

That's the only bread my granddad would eat. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile View Quote My grandparents ate it. At the time, I was a white bread man, though still a child. Now that I've been awakened to the evils of carbs, especially white bread, it is reserved for cheat days, tomato sandwiches and sopping up spicy BBQ sauce with ribs. |

West Coast thing wasn't it?
All we ate in L.A. as kids , we weren't allowed Wonderdough There was something called Hillbilly bread made by Nichols (iirc) around Pittsburgh in the 70's that was a close second. We ate that while visiting relatives |

Roman meal and spartan supermarkets....... not sure why I associate those two things but I do

Yes, I remember it. It was all white bread before wheat started making its appearance in the late '60s. Roman Meal was among them.

Roman meal and spartan supermarkets....... not sure why I associate those two things but I do View Quote Same here. Back then, we grew and delivered an ass ton of produce to the local Spartan stores. We knew who's stuff was in the local Hardings. When Carter fucked everyone with the embargo, and jacked interest rates to the moon, we lived on Spartan Hot dogs, Spartan dried milk, Mastitis sows, and stuff from the garden. Funny thing. There was no such thing as "Paleo" back then, and few people were fat, despite not eating "Paleo", and Organic fucktards, were recognized truthfully as reactionary dipshits. |

I remember that bread from my childhood. It was the only kind my mom would buy and I hated it. Eating a sandwich on white bread at a friends house was always such a novelty.
