Beretta and Dan Tanna (spelling on both?) were pretty good, too.

Not a cop but Father Dowling Mysteries with Tom Bosley. Loved the episode where the killer used ice bullets that left no trace.

He was a PI, wasn’t he?  Actually, wasn’t he just some rich guy who went around sticking his nose into situations?  Man, my mother LOOOVED that show!

Harry O  was a series cut short by the death of the main character - David Janssen. poor ratings. Janssen lived 4 years after it was cancelled.

(I remember an episode where the bad guys were following him. He rode the city bus. And this was in the days before pollution controls, so they were smelling exhaust fuels the whole way. Awwww.)

Not TV, but Bogie as Sam Spade. He's my idea of the detective.

I would go with this for T.V. If we were talking any old detective it would be Nick Charles from "The Thin Man " series from the 30s & 40s.

Steve McGarrett from HAWAII FIVE O (original series, not that remake shit).

He always had the best neckties.

Danno was a cool motherfucker too.

(Yes, I know Jack Lord was a prick IRL).
