Has anyone here ever watched that movie? I have watched this movie dozens of times and I always come to the same conclusion.

The stranger (Clint Eastwood) IS Marshal Duncan. What are your thoughts?

High Plains Drifter (8/8) Movie CLIP - The Stranger Rides Away (1973) HD

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Plains_Drifter

EDITED at 1:48pm      Large amounts of alcohol were consumed during the making of this thread. I, and my friends had just watched the movie and were having fun.

I sure am glad I didn't have to work today, because I feel like shit. Two of the guys are still asleep.

When Clint Eastwood was on "In the Actors Studio" he said the stranger was Marshall Duncan's brother.

From IMDB:

So who exactly is the stranger?
This is purposely left ambiguous to give it an almost supernatural feel, but the theories put forth are as follows: (1) The stranger is Marshal Jim Duncan's brother who learned that the three men who killed his brother were being released from prison and would likely return to their town, so the stranger "passed through" in order to take revenge on the three men and on the town itself for simply standing by and watching as his brother was brutally murdered. (2) The stranger was Marshal Jim Duncan himself come back to exact his revenge (perhaps through a deal with the devil.). This would explain why nobody in the town recognized him, but he knew how exactly the Marshal was killed and he was able to kill the three men in the same way. (3) The stranger was the ghost of Marshal Duncan.

At the end when mordacai was carving the name on the wooden marker he says " I don't even know your name."
The stranger says, yes you do and the shot turns to Jim Duncan's name on the marker.
It was the marshals ghost seeking revenge.

I don't see how. Dude raised to much hell to be a ghost.

Which brings up another question. The guy being whipped in the street while the cowards watched sounded just like the stranger.

He wasn't a ghost, he was a revenant. A revenant is someone returned from the dead to exact revenge on the living.

Brandon Lee in The Crow is an example of a revenant.

I don't see how there can be any confusion. He was a ghost. Aside from the bit at the end where we told the little guy that he already knew his name, he also disappeared as he rode off.

He also clearly had the marshal's memories.

Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't in High Plains Drifter!

By the way, nobody has mentioned how he just appears out of thin air at the opening of the film and dissappears at the end.  That should tell you something--ithammers in the reason for the last lines of dialogue.

It's his brother who was whipped to death. In the flashbacks, you can see the sheriff. It wasn't Clint Eastwood.

I don't understand you fuckin' guys. He was not a ghost. HEAT waves and shit causes the beginning and the ending of the movie.

If Marshal Duncan was whipped to death in the street with the exact same voice as the stranger, why didn't the townsfolk recognize the Marshal? With the same face minus a beard?

I always assumed it was the Marshal who didn't die, and came back for revenge.
The supernatural angle is interesting, and the fact that they paint the town red, and call it "HELL" makes the ghost story aspect possible.
