Yup. Ant raft... you cannot drown fire ants.
They'll float until they encounter something they can swarm onto... God help you if that's your leg. ETA: when I was a little kid, and didn't understand strength-in-numbers, I found a huge wolf spider after we'd had a tropical system push a bunch of water inshore (we were vacationing down on a bayou in Mississippi at a relative's house). I floated the huge spider right into an ant raft, just to watch the HUGE spider slaughter a bunch of hapless ants. Oh yeah... that didn't go NEARLY like I thought it would go. They had that spider dead-and-dismembered so fast, it had my jaw hanging open. Truly impressive. |

Actually happened to my dad's neighbor after Katrina, a huge floating colony got into his house. From the pictures it was the size of a large truck tire.
FYI, his other neighbor had a few cotton mouths and a 5' alligator in his house. At least he said that was the reason it caught on fire

I saw a feat of superhuman strength due to a fire ant ball in Lafayette, LA.
I was playing rugby on a field that was under three inches of water. Our hooker got tackled and dog piled into the water. All of a sudden he stood up straight, throwing everyone off him yelling "Ants! Ants! I've got ants!!!!" Game play stopped as we started smashing the ants to bits, using Glen as the smashing board. He was covered in ant bites, hell we all were. Then we finished the game. |

You should have seen the fire ant flotillas we had when Hurricane Juan flooded us out. My uncle had a blast running them over with his jet ski.
