Was the four shot rocket launcher in the movie Commandor a movie prop or an actual replica of a real launcher.

Everything in Commando was REAL!!! Can't believe that anyone would ask such a question ...
|
|
You mean this one?
The one in the movie is a prop, of course, but based on the 202 if I remember it right. |

Do you have any idea how disappointed I was as a kid when I discovered that army surplus stores didn't actually have things like that?

The effects of the rocket blast are easily stopped by wearing a chainmail vest.

"What do you think she's doing?"
"I think she's got something for us" |

I really want to feel for the hidden button every time I go into a gun shop.

Liberals believe that all gun stores have racks and racks of full auto, belt feds, and rocket launchers. All for sale, no questions asked.
I remember the M202 Flash being mentioned in one of my older TM's back in the Army. Supposedly fired incendiary rockets of some type. We trained on the LAW back then in '88. I have never actually seen the Flash though. I also wore a steel pot through basic.... |

Unfortunately obsolete. Thermobaric weapons are extremely useful in CQB but dangerous to use. The Russians use them.

You can buy the launchers, they are not considered a weapon. Last one I saw pop up for sale and sold was about $1200. I don't search for them as much anymore but when I was deep into collecting rocket launchers seemed like three or four would pop up for sale every year. Gunbroker is the best place to look for them

The warheads used a jelly called Thickened Pyrophoric Agent, or TPA. It ignites on contact with air. The manual has a part about when one of your 4-rocket reload bails is dripping "burning goo"-- the manual says to throw the bail of rockets into a foxhole (does not specify unmanned or otherwise), and run 20 meters away. Later it mentions that the burst radius of the warhead is 50 kmeters. Not real reassuring, but except for that, a very handy tool to have in the box. The new fuel-air SMAW rounds work better, have much better range and are way more accurate, though. The 2nd Ranger Batt out here seems to be very happy with their Carl Gustafs.

However I commend the charltans at the surplus store that were able to sell a empty OD green can and packing material as a "backpack rocket launcher". http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/698642000/698642040/pix540306899.jpg View Quote |

I fired one in Wildflecken 1990. Berlin Bde still retained some unique weapon systems phased out of regular Inf units, so for our size we were more lethal than a comparable unit in the West or CONUS. We had M47 Dragons in Weapons Squad in each Rifle Platoon, TOWs in Combat Support Co (CSC) or HHC later. But we also still had M67 90mm Recoilless Rifles in our Weapons Squad, too. 3x81mm Mortars in each Rifle Co then 4x4.2in or 120s in CSC or HHC. We also kept M72A2/3 LAWs in our combat load along with the newer M136 AT4s launchers which I hated. I'd rather carry 2or even 3xM72 LAW instead of that M136. And 1 x M202A1 FLASH launcher per Rifle Co although it could have been more.
In 1990 when it came time to shut down Wildflecken Training Area to turn over to the Bundeswehr, we had a shit load of ordnance in our training stash to get rid of. 90mm AP Flechette rounds, LAWS, thousands of 40mm golden death eggs and M202 FLASH clips. Our Mortar Plt got one 4rd M202 Clip and drew lots to see who would get to shoot them at an old M48 tank downrange. I was one of the lucky ones. Big heavy bulky box on your shoulder, same folding sight as the 3.5in M20 Super-Bazooka. Extremely long and heavy trigger creep (its double action), imagine the M72 LAW trigger but 3 times as worse, the M67 90mm RCL was an M1911 by comparison. So you are trying to squeeze the trigger slow and consistently to keep the Bazooka 2x or 3x sight on target, while 16lbs of rocket clip tried to pull the launcher down in the back. So squeeze, grit, grit, grit, grit, grit, grit, snap KAROOOM! Rocket flies thru the air like a .45ACP bullet, you would swear you could see it the entire way, it hits the tank, and it looked like a white phosphorus round explosion, but more concussive, then in just over a second and a half the smoke cloud floats away like the morning fog. |
