I had one as my first car (bought myself) loved that car.....got totaled when I got hit head on.

In the South it was the top tier tuna trawler of its day.
My college roommate had an '82 (? The first year of that style whatever year it was) Trans Am. The ubiquitous black and gold color. It had a 4-speed; the only one I've ever seen. My old 340 Challenger would blow the doors off it. |

They handle awesome. My t tops squeaked until I welded in subframe connectors, now they are quiet. I always have a grin on my face when I drive it, I just wish I could hook up without pulling 50% of the pedal. View Quote |

1LE for the win as far as factory cars went.
The cars were sexy but the quality wasn't great. I like them anyway, an LS swap would make this car much better. |

I still like them.

When they change the body style to the Gen 3, I was not liking it until I saw one in a HotRod magazine with the hood chopped and a big ass Weiand blower and dual carbs. I think I still have that picture somewhere.

Same color as mine. To bad it died a horrid death before 100k. Radiator, oil pump, and computer in a week

I’ve always been a gbody guy, IROCs do look cool, though. But I sort of have a thing for shitty late 70s and 80s cars that lend themselves to be easily modified.

Driving down I95 and the becth would shut off. Don't remember how many trips to service dept it had. Dam thing leaked tranny fluid till it was totaled-it got t-boned on pass side hit by a tanker Oldsmobile. The women who hit me did me a huge favor. I loved them back in the day. Saw one at Mecum auction a few years ago. Brought back memories. But, I never even considered it. Now, if it was a C2 Vette, I'd been all over it. |

They were beautiful. Just try not to think about horsepower numbers compared to today's cars. View Quote Does anyone else remember the way the front of the RS extended about 87 feet past the wheel wells? About two weeks after I got mine, I was visiting my Dad and let him drive it. 10 minutes later he'd put the nose into a curb. Oh, the good old days. |

Hideous example of the 80's car making. I can hear "Pour Some Sugar On Me" blaring out of the Pioneer head unit with warbling azimuth problems, just looking at it.

I had an Anniversary Edition (91, 92?) Metallic Green T-Top RS with the 305. I was soooo pissed a few years later when the base model v6 had 25 more HP than I did. It was a great, great, super-wonderful high speed low RPM highway cruiser. Off the line though, you might as well have gotten out and pushed. View Quote |

THere was no greater joy in my life than kicking the absolute shit of of them drag racing. Every mod I made, every rebuild, every upgrade to my Mustang was made to embarrass every single one of them I ran across. And from where I’m from there was a lot of it. Fun times indeed...

I like 3rd gen f bodies. One of these days I'll get one again.

My roomate in college (94-95) had a white RS that he kept pretty clean. He was an eastern KY redneck so it was a good fit. It was slow.
My best friend bought a 84ish red and gray Z28 Camaro back in 92 when he was in the Marines stationed in VA. It was a pile of shit. Sounded like a bus, smelled of spoiled vinyl, and drank coolant and engine oil. We took a roadtrip to D.C. and that thing was boiling over. It was slow as well. He was deployed some time later and wherever his car was parked he piled up fees and it was towed. He let them keep it lol. |
|
My first car in high school (2002ish) was an 86 t-top Camaro with the awesomely underpowered 2.8 V6. Bought it for $500 bucks. It was ghetto as all hell, but it beat taking the school bus to school. Wish I had a picture of it, it was blue with a primer gray nose.

I put it on a few of my friends in Mustangs though it pains me to admit it. Not much of a race usually and a Mustang with an automatic better just get back up on the porch. I think the OP's ride is the best body style and color of any Camaro. OP is a man of style and good taste. |

Yeah Iknowrite? Those thirdgens were soooo shitty and ugly that they only sold about 2 million copies of them. I mean what a total failure right?
Things to know about the thirdgens 1. they are rapidly increasing in value. - 92 1LE Z28 w/ 5k miles sold at BJ Las Vegas in October for $30,000 - 90 15k miles IROC sold at BJ Las Vegas in October for $22,000 - You can't touch a "nice example" of a 87-92 TPI car now for anything less than $7-8,000. That's the same price as EVERY "nice" 93-99 2. They are starting to get serious attention from the "pro-touring" crowd as no normal person can afford a 67-69 and there are less "good" 70-73s available for a decent price. Car mags are running more stories on them which indicate the serious shift in interest. DSE just built one, Heidts built one, etc. Here's a video that will spell it out for you............. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXUSEKxQCUA These companies are ALWAYS on the edge of the next muscle car trend. They aren't going to blow this kind of money on R&D unless they see a future with this platform. 3. Everyone who's a GenX that isn't gay LOVES these cars. 4. Back in the late 70's and early 80's the "white trash" camaro then was the 67-69. Imagine that? 5. the 1987 5.7 IROC with a measley 230hp COMPLETELY STOCK pulled a .92g on the skid pad with 1987 TIRE TECH! You wanna know what a 2018 camaro pulls? a .98 and the 2010 pulls a .92!!!! All the thirdgen needs is the modern engine and it OUTPERFORMS every modern camaro. 5. I see just as many if not more Honda civics, eclipses and even new edge mustangs up on blocks at the local trailer park. Ol' billy white trash doesn't run a thirdgen anymore If you are a fan of these cars I can tell you that you only have a limited amount of time before the "good ones" are all priced over $10,000 so pick one up before you have to settle for a RS or a pre-87. Once the pro-touring crowd takes notice, the prices skyrocket. Same thing happened in the early 2000's with the 70-73s as NO ONE GAVE A SHIT about the 70-73s until someone slapped a set of 17s on them and installed a LT1 and/or LS1. |

Quoted: We first swapped a B & M blower onto my 1984 Z-28... https://i.imgur.com/ZY6PEHg.jpg Bad pic, I know....this was someone else's camera....I didn't have one, any spare cash was spent on car parts in the 80's. We added nitrous after, and promptly shattered the poor T5. I replaced that with a manual valve-body TH350, then shatter the diff. Went to a Dana 44, then twisted the driveshaft into a pretzel. I then figured I d just back-half the car with tubs, four-link and subframe, and narrow the Dana. Then, the 305 was way out of place, so a 383 was in the middle of a build when I said eff-it, and went to a 454 and 8-71 combo, with a 250 shot of gas. Then I killed the Dana (axle-tubes twisted in the housing in California, had to do an emergency road-trip weld job to limp home with). Got it home, and a bad-ass 9" was taking Dana's place when the welder chucked sparks into the interior (he was too lazy to pull it out, or protect it), and it went up like a candle, taking the whole shop with it. https://i.imgur.com/aMojN9N.jpg View Quote At least the dumbass burned his shop down with it |

I went to an "upper middle class" high school and parked this next to all the other kids BMWs, new mustangs, 3000GTs, turbo talons, etc. Lets just say the GTA was undefeated back in those days and all my "rich" friends wanted one but their boring parents bought them generic appliance cars to get them from A to B. After college though many of them bought one and blamed me for getting them "hooked" lol. Nice car. I'm guessing the notchback took a good amount of weight off the back compared to the hatch & aerowing combo you'd normally find on a GTA. Did you encounter traction issues? View Quote Here's my friend's 87 5spd IROC, we used to run door hand to door handle ALL the time when we were both stock. His was a 87 305 TPI 5spd car. People that say these things didn't run low 14s stock either didn't know how to drive, had one that was run into the ground or didn't have a 5.7 or the 5.0/5spd TPI combo. We'd run side by side with the LT1s and they'd shit their pants as we were supposed to be "slow" lol. He still has his IROC and now it has a Class II 383 with holley stealth ram and I think a 525 lift cam making around 425hp. Nobody will run him as they don't want to lose to a 3rd gen! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s9jvAqYtk4 Right now as you can see in the video it's a part as he's "lightening" it up as he plans to road race it. |
