OK, my friend wants to purchase just one handgun for home defense and concealed carry.
He is not a noob as he has been shooting with me for years. He has not purchased to this date because of a antigun now X-Wife. He has a budget of $1k. Given there are many new guns available that I know nothing about (e.g. Hudson, Canik, Grand Power, etc.) I thought I would ask the hive what you thought. I was going to recommend a Glock 19 or M&P 9 compact. What one gun would you recommend he put on his short list? |
|
I went with the M&P 2.0 compact and like it.
Glock 19 is also a good choice. ETA my HD gun is a full size, and my CC gun is compact. He should do the same. |
|
Well, both my recommendations still appear to be worthwhile. Any others he should consider?

|
Glock 19 and spend the rest of the $1K on practice ammo and training.

Glock 19
M&P 9 compact (2.0 version) Ruger 1911 (Light weight Commander size) Springfield 1911 Ruger Security 9 (lots of $ left over for ammo) |

Any firearm that fits his budget from
S&W Glock H&K Sig Walther CZ Beretta That he likes and he can shoot, manipulate well.... |
|
G19 or M&P9C is exactly what I was going to recommend. Looks like you already know the answer.
|
|
Glock 19, night sights, good holster, 4 mags (one for carry, one spare for the hip if he chooses, one spare in the car, then an extra for parts etc)
Spend the rest on ammo, maybe a class. That would serve 99% of Americans just fine for self defense |
|
SIG SP2022 in 9x19mm. Get the variant with the threaded barrel.
Spend the $500 remaining on magazines, a can, and tax stamp. |

All are more accurate, all are more refined, some more than others. But the best thing is to have said friend go to the range & shoot a dozen different guns. |

Glock 19. /thread. View Quote I will again make the case that the Glock 19 is the current equivalent/replacement to what a S&W Model 10 was during the 80's. So many people use to recommend the Model 10 for new shooters or single firearm type owners. That role seems to have been filled by the Glock 19. |
|
I would suggest a Glock but he needs to understand how the trigger works. Some people are uncomfortable with the concept.

Friday Cabelas advert for P365 at $599 for the gun, an iwb holster, a 12 round mag, and a couple of boxes of ammo, hp and ball.
Good deal. |
|
Glock 19
M&P 2.0 Compact Walther, CZ or Beretta could all be good choices if one of their compact offerings appeals to him more I would tell him to go with a design that has been on the market for a while. I would also recommend going for a major manufacturer pistol due to availability of magazines, accessories and holsters. With his budget he should easily be able to buy whatever pistol in this pool he wants, extra mags, ammo, holster and a weapon light. |
|
Glock 19, M&P 9mm 2.0 C, HK VP9 Can he rent those three? Which ever he likes better or shoots better will be great. Some people shoot the G19 exceptionally well...others not so much. The VP9 and the M&PC are very easy to shoot well. VP9 has awesome trigger.

If your friend is not a noob, he should have already bought the Glock 19 without asking.
|
|
Personally I don't use the same gun for carry and HD. And with a $1,000 budget there is definitely room for two there.
Maybe a Glock and a Shield. |
|
Keep saving his money until he triples his budget, because he's gonna need a quality holster, quality belt, lots of ammo, a range membership, and several courses with competent instructors. Then Glock, M&P, H&K, or Kahr.

Whatever firearm he gets MAKE SURE he gets a very high quality belt and holster. Nothing turns a person off to daily carrying more than an inadequate belt and holster. He needs to get comfortable with the daily routine of putting a gun on, not printing, and especially not having your pants sag or fall down always pulling them up and tucking in all the while being on edge because hes carrying. A quality rig minimizes these things and makes it become 2nd nature when getting dressed. I like CZ and Sig but he should get what HE feels comfortable and confident with. This might not be the most expensive option but don't skimp out on the belt and holster. I like Looper and Beltman belts and crossbreed and Mtac holsters, but this too is a rather personalized decision...

Glock 26. Gen 3, 4, or 5, or Polymer 80. Use the remaining money to get a threaded bbl, a small can, holster, light/laser, night sights.

G19 does everything with no excess. Except sights. You have to put metal sights on it.

SIG P320
SIG 226/229 Legion Walther PPQ M2 Ruger SR9 Springfield XD-9 Don't waste money on a Glock. It's a shit gun for the price. You're paying for the brand, not the features. You're getting less and worse features than comparative handguns from other companies. |
