Interesting fact about the tri-jets: they were independently designed by their manufacturers, but both had the exact same wingspan - 155 ft, 4 inches.

And I vote for the P-51D Mustang as the most beautiful aircraft.

I've always loved the Supermarine Spitfire, the Lightning, and the ME-109.

The MD-500 helo is a great looking machine too.

I've always thought they were amazing looking aircraft.

ETA: All variants of the P38 are great looking. I posted the P38M just for it's specialty role.
I concur, more P38 love

The creators of the TV show Star Trek: Enterprise were inspired by the twin-boom features of the P-38 in their design of the Enterprise NX-01.

Finally someone posts the right answer, OP and the following like 10 posts are full of fail and aids.

Some great pics. Some of the smaller civ planes I haven't seen before.

For warbirds I've always been partial to the P-40 Warhawk.

I'm also partial to the Art Deco racers of the 30's like the Comet.

It's interesting that many of the planes in this thread are "beautiful" because the form followed the function.  Aesthetics were not a primary design consideration for the military planes, but what we ended up with moves you.

The F-4 for example.  Ungainly as hell but my God...

The Russian aesthetic has fascinated me too.  Some of their aircraft had great lines.

Civilian -private aircraft- are different.  Some designers obviously went for aesthetics to make a statement, do something different, and sell airframes.

And some clearly integrated aesthetics into their design playing to their markets:

Some pushed the design aesthetic too far:

And some designers were just artists and got it right:
