Well, I now own a bear trap.. damn phone won’t let me upload the photo.. I’ll have to wait till I get done with work.. I set it 5 or 6 times yesterday, not to hard at all.. just used c-clamps and made sure my hands were always under the jaws when working with the dog/pan.. very powerful springs.. I weigh about 180, and my full weight even with good bounce wont compress one of the springs..

My bear trap is probably one of the best conversation starters around.  I turned the springs around on it so it looks set, but can't actually fire.  I'll put a pic up later.

Not following? Are the jaws open and spring tied down or what.. I agree it would look better on the wall open but I don’t wanna disable it either.. I like playing with it.. puts a world of hurt on a shovel handle I’ll tell ya that..

I'm not home right now so I can't grab a pic, but here's a rundown:

C-Clamp the long springs to where they aren't putting pressure on the trap, disassemble and remove the jaws, flip the springs around to where the big hole is on the bottom and the small one on the top, then reassemble the trap.  You can have it open and "set" without it really being set.  Looks neater that way, in my opinion.

ETA: The ears of the springs have a small hole and a large hole per spring.  The small hole won't let that half of the spring ride up on the jaws.  So if you turn the compressed spring around to have the big hole on the bottom, the small hole won't let the spring ride up and apply pressure on the jaws.  It's completely reversible, but it neuters your trap for display purposes.

Got it.. no concerns about the spring under constant compression/tension?

The trappers would carry some kind of tool to open the jaws by themselves if they got trapped. Forgot the details, but someone will be along shortly....

Springs wear out by going through the compression cycle multiple times, not by staying compressed.

I’m quite familiar with the trap regs here.. I have trapped before, and have dozens of conibears/foot hold traps.. I run a small line on my land every year.. the bear trap I want won’t ever be “set” out doors for any reason.. it’s more of a function decoration thing I want for my house.. my living room looks like a hunting lodge, deer heads, antlers and old hunting gear/ traps everywhere.. I think a old bear trap over my wood stove would add a nice touch.. however I don’t want a fake one..either.. because well maybe some day zombies...

Not to mention, USING bear traps is probably illegal just about everywhere. in a house like that it would be a cool addition though.

Start with a conibear 330 if you want to screw with something that has some ass to it, they are cheap enough and you can probably find one locally.

Don't mess with big traps, even on your own land, without knowing all the regs however.

Many large traps are illegal for land sets in NY, they either need to be contained, so many feet off the ground, or fully submerged in water. You don't want to do this to someone's hunting dog.

An old friend of mine used to have large quantities of cash at times. He'd often store a duffel bag of cash in his attic. Right above the entrance to his attic he'd stage 2 bear traps!

I was fucking amazed when I saw it. It's funny you mention them because I think it was last night this subject came up at dinner. We were talking about that FBI agent that got shot by the booby trapped wheelchair (in the news). My son said "didn't you have a friend who used bear traps?"

Any tips on how I could speed up the rust process on this trap? It’s to shiny and looks out of place with all my other rusty decorations?
Link Posted: 10/16/2018 2:03:40 PM EDT
[#36]
I used to just boil them and then hang outside until desired rust.

One that big, probably degrease it with whatever cheap degreaser you have and do the same.

Some use salt water or vinegar and water to speed things up.

Some dye and wax their traps but if yours is gonna be inside, that should be unnecessary.

Have you tried eBay for an old Victor, New house or B&L? Next summer look up your state trappers association convention and go to that. I think you said your in New York? If so I've always heard y'all have a good convention, you probably could find and old one there.

Didn't see you had bought one op, looks good. All my new traps I just toss out in the yard to rust. Should look good when you hang it

You do know you don't use a trap in a rusty state, don't you?  They are lightly rusted so the logwood trap dye will "take."  They are black and shiny once you dye and wax them.  The finish that comes on those repros is meant to simulate that.
View Quote
Yes.. I know this.. I wax and dye my traps that I actually use for trapping, only I use wallnut hulls as my yard is full of them.. takes a few years for the traps to get that black/rusty dull patina look naturally, I’m just trying to force that look quicker then actually boiling it, burying it, boiling it again, dying it, waxing it, burring it ect..
