Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't that have gone on the booster? They aren't going to try to catch the ship.

Maybe they are going for at least one full orbit with the ship and bringing it back for a catch?

Ah probably not, they would have to file paperwork with the FAA for that I imagine. It would be coming back from orbit over peoples homes.

No wires, no (exposed) sensors, nothing flammable exposed, that's impressive.
It has been reduced to its simplest form.
It can be mass produced.
That is an appliance. Kinda like a light bulb.

Raptor 3 is still incredibly complex, but all that complexity has been moved inside vs hanging out in the breeze. There is a ton of additive manufacturing going on that enables hyper-complex internal shapes, without which Raptor 3 would not be possible.

Not to mention Elon HATES flanges and bolts on rocket motors...

Bro, the thing I'm looking at is the serialization.

300+ of these rocket engines?

Who the hell has ever built that many?

Certainly not NASA.

Mmm, for now. If they can reliably catch the booster then we won’t have to worry about that. It looks like it’s going to be quite a transition when they switch to Raptor 3s.

As I keep saying about the RS-25s. They belong in museums! That said I wouldn’t be shocked at all if the Shuttle RS-25s get used up in SLS flights and the new build ones wind up in museums.

Shoot, I’ve been saying it for so long that I might as well make a meme out of it.

Each test flight uses 39 of them, right?  Looks like SpaceX was ready for 9 test flights.  I wonder if they're going to scrap some of them and use Raptor 3's before they run out of these.  (With all the gadgetry at the top, those must be Raptor 2's.)

Probably but it might be fun to see if he could turn it around and bring back some innovation. Commercial aviation is a whole other thing so I'm not sure it's possible for a huge turnaround but maybe we get VTOL supersonic passenger jets

According to Nasaspaceflight they are doing quite a lot of work on the Chopsticks. Its probably going to be at least a few more weeks until the next flight.

That could be a bit of an embarrassment. "The booster was fine. It did everything it was supposed to. But the Chopsticks didn't work and the whole tower got mangled."

I simply want Elon to keep his promise and give us suborbital point to point travel on this planet. Chicago to Sydney in 90 minutes would be awfully nice.

They have probably burned through over 160 raptors so far in testing, hop flights, and the full stack launches.  Even after they manage catching the booster - they will continue to burn through raptors at a slower rate - I think a lot of flights will be one way (I think the estimate is 1k rockets to Mars, plus potential parking Starships in orbit as fuel and supply depots).  Plus there is the multiple Starship to booster ratio, a bunch of Starships will be in use at any given time.

That said, I suspect by the time the 3rd version of Starship is being launched, it will be Raptor 3 based (abet Starship might still be using left over Raptor 2's), with Raptor 4 already in the works.  Raptor 3 might be better in every way - but there is at least a chance Musk might save pennies if he has extra 2's doing nothing better.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. I seem to recall hearing quite some time ago that Lockheed and BWX had been issued a contract for a demonstration nuclear engine to go between here and the moon. Nuclear engines have a lot of advantages and space is already full of ionizing radiation.

I'm not an engineer in that field but I don't see how Raptor 3 can be improved. It already looks like something far beyond most current liquid rocket motors.

Getting to Mercury will probably demand a nuclear engine of some sort. In my view that rock is far more valuable than Mars will ever be.

It's going to be interesting when Musk finally opens a nuclear division. There's quite a few people who have been waiting impatiently for him to do that.

One of his engineers started a company to design and build lightweight reactors for space. They have videos on yt but I don't remember the name.

There have been nuclear rocket engines since the sixties. As limited as technology was back then they didn't get very far. New core designs and advancements in materials and design dynamics should put a useable engine in our lifetime. Fusion is another type that shows promise.

Mercury is a bit more habitable than Mars if you can stay between the light and dark sides. But the main things that it offers are resources, especially water. Combined with the energy of the sun.

The first thing that will need to be built on Mercury will be a railway track. Once that is completed other things will grow out of it. Solar reflectors can be built en mass out of it's resources. Once we have a large industrial base on the planet then we have the ability to do all manner of interesting things with the Sun's energy. Directing it away from Venus. Towards Mars, making the sun itself an engine that will allow us to take the solar system wherever we want to go.

The sheer size of these projects will demand that they take millennia. There will also be the necessity that they be managed by a computer network more sophisticated than anything we have right now. Something more evolved than most people currently alive on this planet. But I believe that this can be done and that it will give us a future well beyond most people's imaginations. Which are unfortunately mostly stuck somewhere between Mad Max and Star Trek.

Who knows, Mad Max might still be a possibility. But that won't last forever. Star Trek won't happen for a bundle of different reasons. The big one being that FTL travel is probably not something that we are ever going to crack anytime soon and even if we do. Its energy demands will probably be quite outrageous.

I think he has announced plans to have a large orbiting refueling depot at some point.

There's plenty of people playing with ideas of how Starship could be used to build a very large station. Hell, one passenger Starship would have more internal volume than the ISS.

For now though there are other outfits with their own plans involving Falcon 9. Axiom probably has the most plausible proposal since they are actually building the thing.

Here's another, brought to you by the guy behind Mtgox.

I can't wait to see what they build with Starship launches.

Skylab is the closest thing we've ever had in terms of a space station segment similar to what Starship could put up.  People forget how much of a beast it was at 22 feet diameter.

It's sorta uncharted territory in terms of what you could build with superheavy launches that don't cost a billion dollars per shot.

Visiting the US Rocket and Space Center in Huntsville is a bit disappointing, except for Skylab.

I genuinely couldn't believe it when I walked into the training module they have on display. The volume of space inside is absolutely stunning in comparison to an Orbiter, ISS, or anything else ever launched with meat inside. Skylab is the closest we've ever come to true sci-fi space stations before...and we gave up on it.

A couple of Starships joined together and made into habs is going to really be something.
