My dad is a retired military helicopter pilot, I grew up in places like Ft. Rucker (6 years there). Literally hundreds of them flew over at low altitude (low enough that you could tell the IP from the student by the tread wear on their flight boots, students had new boots, IPs had worn soles). It was just the background noise to life for us.
I joined the Army at 18, spent most of my time at Bragg. After the Army it was Memphis, under the approach, jets at all hours. Then several years in Fayetteville, NC, not far from Simmons. When we moved here to Augusta, GA it took me months to figure out why I was having trouble sleeping, the Airport here doesn't get much traffic after dark, the lack of aircraft noise was the problem. My whole life I had slept with the constant drone of aircraft, and sporadic aerial gunnery and artillery fire. I found the quiet to be disturbing for a long time.
