A single mom friend of mine had one and that is what she called it. I lost a weekend of my life that i cannot get back replacing the AC evaporator because a garage was going to charge her 16 hours of labor to do it. It took every bit of that. Had to strip the dash all of the way down to the firewall! Only had one screw left over when i reassembled it.

PT Cruisers seem to have been primarily bought by people that like to drive under the speed limit in the left lane. Since it's basically a re-bodied Dodge Neon, it's mechanically a piece of junk. Neons seemed to disappear of the roads just a few years after their production ended.

Any remaining PT Cruisers should be put in a stadium for an epic demolition derby, with the winner then being set afire. The world would be a more beautiful place afterwards.

Stylistically, they weren't horrible, not great, not horrible, just okay.

As noted by OP, they were a dumpster bin of garbage parts that routinely caught fire as a result.

You can buy one off of me for $1,000, last year of production, second owner, 80,000 miles. It was my wife's car until it burnt a valve (I haven't done the leakdown yet, but pretty sure). Oil always changed at 4k miles, transmission fluid changed twice, has good tires and brakes and spark plugs changed every 30k.

Besides the burnt valve, it consumes oil (about a quart between oil changes), the electronic trunk latch is broken, the shifter support is broken (just replaced the shift cable), the blend door sometimes sticks, the light for max ac goes on and off (not sure why), the passenger seat's airbag weight sensor has an issue and dings randomly (all connectors are tight). The PCV hose cracked, but I replaced it. I replaced the CPS sensor once in it's lifetime. Finally it needs a timing belt (due to age) and all engine mounts and likely shocks.

It's under-powered even more so with the AC on and the interior is shit like all Chrysler's of that era and uses way too much plastic that squeaks and rattles. The burnt valve is a design flaw and you can't guarantee it won't do it again, the book time is approximately 12+ hours. So do you really want a PT Cruiser? The only benefit it was cheap for my gf now wife when she bought it and would have been a pretty cheap cost of ownership if it didn't burn a valve recently.

All of the problems listed above are pretty common and I likely forgot some.

I rented one in 2009 to go a couple of states away to actually scatter the ashes of a deceased close relative.
I was not impressed with the fuel mileage and I remember definitely making that comment to my brother that was with me on the trip.
On top of that the car was rented from National and was dirty as shit when they gave it to us.

Do not buy one ever. The one we had was the biggest piece of crap around. If you do get one, be prepared to eventually get a new engine as these are notorious for engine issues/failures. Read up on those 2.4 liter engines and you will decide not to get a cruiser. There are 2 types of Cruisers-1) that has an oil leak and 2) one that will. It was a design flaw with the engine and there is no cure other than a new engine as nothing can fix it. Whoever designed the engine compartment needs to be shot, then hung, then electrocuted and then drawn and quartered. I had to replace the starter twice and it was a pain in the neck. Get one and see what I mean. You will curse the day you got it. No kidding.

I had a 2003 PT GT (bought new) for a couple of years. It was a hoot to drive with the turbo. No complaints. Traded it in on a 2005 Magnum RT AWD for more room & more power.

I hate the styling but got to drive a rental once, some years ago. I liked the ride!

OTOH Older Brother got one used and learnt that it is a major PITA to work on, had to remove some sheet metal to change the battery.

Wife loves them and we had two, a 2004 and a 2009. She put 65,000 trouble free miles on the 2004. Sold it to my older sister and she killed it at 120,000 miles but she is rough on cars. Same sister bought a 2008 and killed it in 3 years. You could give my sister a brand new Toyota and within a couple years it would be a piece of shit and dead. Put 70,000 trouble free miles on the 2008 and sold it to my older brother who still drives it, has around 90,000 miles on it.

I didn't like them at first but they are easy they are easy to get into and it grew on me. Rough riding, slow and poor gas mileage. I would not want another one.

BTW, the local Chrysler dealer just sent me an email today wanting to buy my PT Cruiser and would refund my last service. Wonder why they want that old car?

They were kind of novel when they first came out. A nice retro.

I've ridden in a couple and they're not that bad.

But they wore it out.
