Ontario RAT 1 is a hell of a knife for 27 dollars.

I've had, and have, expensive folders. They may hold an edge a little longer than this AUS8 steel. But this one is plenty good enough and I don't care if I abuse or lose it. After all, it's a tool. Not a fashion statement or status symbol.

Bite the bullet and up your price $20 so you can get Spyderco Para 3 Lightweight.   If you really need it something other than black, wait a little bit and put in another $20 and you can get one in an orange handle with excellent steel.

Same here. Kershawguy has the launch 1 in bronze (kind of burnt orange) for $95. It's above your price range but this is arfcom  and your wallet dragged you here to spend money, right?

There is a D2 version out, about double the price (the aus8 version is only like $25-30).
D2 is way better at holding an edge, a lot harder to sharpen (aus8 gets dull if you think about using it and gets sharp when you threaten it with a stone).

Whichever USA made Kershaw you like the looks of.  I like the Leeks, they are great little utility knives.  Link, Dividend, and Skyline are all at or near your budget.

So far this thread is a random list of knives at different price points and quality levels.   If you get S30V blade steel you will be much happier vs anything from Kershaw or CRKT.  In Spyderco the VG10 doesn't hold an edge near as well so skip those cheaper made in japan models.  Benchmade gets insulted here because of some dumb moves by the founders son,  but if you are willing to buy from Amazon how can you be angry at Benchmade?  Benchmade showed a lapse in judgement, they aren't actively working against your rights as Amazon does.

Benchmade Griptilian or Bugout are budget friendly and good options. plus several other models I really like but those will be getting out of your comfort zone on price.  Spyderco has a terrible service dept where BM is great.  ZT designs are out of touch and there are too many stories of crappy heat treat, plus out of your price zone.

Well it is GD. It's a given that over half of the suggestions will be over budget and/or not conform to OP's clearly stated criteria.

And fuck Bitchmade. After the gun cutting fiasco, Les released a big old fuck you video. And they've personally donated tens of thousands of dollars to gun grabber politicians in multiple states.

S30V is not the great steel it once was with modern developments. The M390/20CV/204P family is better all around, and simpler steels are easier to sharpen, and it's about the chippiest steel out there in semi-mainstream use.

I have a yellow Spyderco Native in that type of steel.  That steel will not rust.  The guys at BladeHQ did torture tests where they left them in a salt water lake for a week, stuff like that.  If you sweat a lot, or live in humid enviros, or work on a freakin’ fishing boat.  Spyderco has a winner with these steels (I think it’s LC200 Steel or something).

I understand buying American. I agree.  But Japan is famous for knives and knife steel.  Samari swords?  It’s not China crap.

The Delica is nice but the VG-10 steel dulls much faster than on a PARA 3 with S30V, K390 or S90V steel. Keep an eye on EE. They pop up frequently.

Question:  Why is the clip always oriented for hinge up carry when clipped into pocket edge or waist?  My best carry is with a cheap knife (it has good steel) that clips with the hinge down so when I grab for it, it is hinge forward in my hand and my thumb placed to push the thumb pin to open the blade.  Am I missing something here?  School me some.

OP - kershaw makes some great autos, too, if that's what you want, called the "launch" series. I carried one of those for a few years after the leek I had. Pushbutton action, very authoritative snap, good steel (CPM-154), and right at your target price.

ETA: well they used to be right at your target price. Looks like $85-$100 now.

How about the disassembly video for the P3LW in which Eric calls it a  Paramilitary 3 (or maybe just PM3) at least once if not multiple times? I haven't watched it since before they were released but I'll try to find a link. I'd say, if Eric mixes it up sometimes, you can't really fault anyone else for doing so also.

Edit: here, found it. He starts in with calling it that at about 2 seconds LOL.

I've had the clips on knives snag on chairs (popped a small sebenza right out of my pocket - luckily someone handed it back to me), swings (broke the clip screw on a buck vantage), golf cart seat handles (lost a kershaw blur in elmax on that one - sucked), and all kinds of other things. I think even a doorway strike plate once.

Edit: plus the leek is small enough you probably can pocket it loose easily enough. May want to actually use the blade lock if you do, though.

My mom just got me that knife in black and had a jeweler put my dad's thumb print on it a week ago.  I like the knife, but then again, this will be my first EDC.  She originally got me the stone washed handle with a composite blade, but it would not show the print very well.
