What was the problem?

Excessive edginess. There’s a lot of that going around.

He lived in Russia.

It was quick.

It was at work and accidental so if there is any insurance his family should be able to collect.

Not a bad outcome, all things considered.

I'm no machinist, but you aren't supposed to wear long sleeves and have long hair around lathes, right? Looked like the lathe grabbed his jacket. Probably an unheated shop. If that's the case, life is still cheap there.

Not really when you think about the demands needed to machine big stuff.

Just think about what this stuff was like back when everything was line shaft drive, and set screws were external square heads on all the pulleys.

Did not watch.

When you feel the chuck jaws swatting your short sleeves it should get your attention.

Wearing long sleeves or gloves is just not done if you are a machinist.

The correct thing to do after witnessing something like this is to write down everything for whoever needs a statement and drink a fuckton of liquor ASAP. The reason is that you will have anterograde amnesia and will not commit it to long term memory.

I had a metal shop teacher that had a long beard, and eventually, it got stuck in the lathe... he managed to grab the headstock and hold long enough that it just ripped the beard hairs off.  After that, he always stayed clean-shaven.

On a serious note, I think it's a wonderful thing when we realize what we're meant for, and what we're not, and don't put ourselves into peril or harm others, because we're in over our heads.

I've done some jobs, that, looking back, were probably going to get me seriously hurt or killed.

And, bless the people who build stuff and do dangerous jobs and have the head for it.

Would have safety briefings on industrial accidents fairly often. One photo that would be shown, before some people complained about the reality, was a person from a South American power plant whose safety harness got caught on the shaft coupling of a shut down steam turbine generator turning 2 rpm. It weighed hundreds of tons. They couldn’t free themselves in time, and turbine couldn’t be stopped to 0 rpm for over five minutes.

If he was in a habit of reaching over the work like that it was only a matter of time regardless of what he was wearing.

I can't even think of a reason to do so, much less one good enough to risk getting caught up.  Maybe adjusting a taper attachment, but that's no reason not to stop the thing or walk behind it.
