When school was a place you went to to actually learn things.

And an Educated person actually knew things.

(Still used to saying STD regardless if everyone uses STI now)

I can still feel and hear that distinctive click of the buttons.

I also remember when Gatorade only came in a glass container. When refrigerators had heavy metal doors with rounded tops and latches on the outside so you damn well never got in one because you'd been warned a thousand times you'd die if you did and those babies kept the bottles of Coke ice cold.

When I was a little kid, our phone looked like this. I don't remember ever having one without a dial, but we lived in a big city (Chicago) so I guess we would have been ahead of some other places. We may have, and I just don't remember it.

Im not old enough to have used it, but i remember WW2 era guys who used the term "cock" for pussy. As in:

"My buddy and me would load up in my cock-wagon and go find some cock about every Saturday night in Anniston. "

My brother and i cracked up hearing that. Old dude (Pacific theater fighter pilot) wondered what we found so amusing. Pissed, even.  He told us that is what they called pussy "in his day".  He was not the only one of that age i heard it from either.

Guess it's akin to me cracking up my daughter's friends when i said: "I have remove a bad tranny from my truck." They thought that hilarious.

I have vague recollections of two mail deliveries every day, and when I looked it up I found this statement.

"The second residential delivery was discontinued on April 17, 1950"

We moved onto a rural delivery route in early 1948, so no more two-a-day mail.

I still have that button.
A little back story. I was a kid living in Queens NY. Besides the guys that came around with vegetable trucks selling produce, there were guys that came around with some type of rides for kids. Little seats that went up and down and around like a mini rollercoster. It cost like a dime to ride. This was all on some large truck thing. Well, at the end, the guy would give the kids a choice of some cheap trinket or a piece of candy. I choose the Ike button. Didn't know anything of politics, but everybody seemed to like the guy. What a different country it was back then.

And nobody was offended by "the R word".

I'm convinced that every generation comes up with shit to be upset over so they can feel more "refined" than the last. Pretty soon "developmentally challenged" will have the same negative connotation as "retarded" and we'll have to come up with another term that doesn't hurt peoples feels. It's just running from the truth no matter how you look at it.

I remember when my grandparents would use the term "colored" and it was totally shocking to people under 60 years old. Now I get it. It was perfectly normal and non-offensive during their lives...why change just because the next generation says so? Even kids my son's age won't say "black" anymore...they'll say "the brown skinned kid over there"...like that's better somehow? We're basically back to "colored".

The same thing will eventually happen to Millennials and I'll laugh my ass off when all their made up, bullshit, PC terms are considered offensive. I'm a young Gen Xer so I'll get to see it happen from the comfort of my retirement home.

I'm so old I've witnessed "disabled" start as a neutral descriptive term, then it became an offensive slur, and now it's come full circle as the best PC choice.

I did some research, inspired by this thread, after a couple of posters asserted that "cock" formerly was used to describe the female genitalia, aka "pussy."

Turns out, that was very much a thing, and but it was reportedly used by southern whites and blacks all over, and was in common usage by blacks as late as the '90s.

Wow.  Had never heard that one before.

“Diversity” and “equity” were financial terms.

“Freedom of speech” was not conditional to specific groups of people.

“Thot” (thought) was something that manifested in your head.

“Tolerance” meant resigning yourself to merely put up with.

“Pride” was either a feeling you get over something you accomplished that others could universally relate to, or a bunch of lions hanging out together.
