Looks like some dry rot. Maybe a skunk looking for a new home?

I'd guess skunk, but if the tree is full standing in that shape I'd be more concerned about dropping it before a good wind does it for you.

Quoted: What is no. 7? Seriously, WTF is that? That’s Radical Larry. He’s all business all the time. Can burrow underground and through trees. |

Quoted: What kind of rodent or animal could do this within a week? Last weekend I mowed the grass and everything was fine. This weekend something ate half my tree. I'm in the WV panhandle, no rivers or lakes nearby. https://i.ibb.co/rmHYKWf/20230514-202428.jpg View Quote Reticulated anal mole. |

I gotta agree with the experts . Radical Larry is probably the culprit. I know the picture looks dated but he is from West Virginia.

That looks like a pretty big Ligma tore that stump up or possibly a juvenile Sukondees

Quoted: That's one of what I was thinking. No chew marks. That's a burrowing animal, likely after food. Skunk. Ground hog. Maybe possum. Doubt it's a coon or squirrel. Porkies just eat the bark and we know what beaver's work looks like. View Quote Occam's razor. Unless you live a half mile or more away, or next to an interstate you'd know if it was a pileated woodpecker. They sound like a miniature jackhammer if they're hitting half solid wood. |

Don't know what did it but seeing that hollow center, and you saying it won't hit anything if it come down.
I'd let mother nature drop that tree! |

There's a wicked video out there of a guy running like hell when a big tree started to collapse. He lived, but not by much. |

What's worse than the trunk of that tree is the dead limbs that can fall on you as your cutting. Not an expert here by any means but I was part of a off road crew "with out bucket trucks" for about 2 years when I was young trimming for the electric company. Low pay and dangerous! |
