I'd guess skunk, but if the tree is full standing in that shape I'd be more concerned about dropping it before a good wind does it for you.

What kind of rodent or animal could do this within a week? Last weekend I mowed the grass and everything was fine.
This weekend something ate half my tree.
I'm in the WV panhandle, no rivers or lakes nearby.

I gotta agree with the experts . Radical Larry is probably the culprit. I know the picture looks dated but he is from West Virginia.

Eh I'll probably chop it down next weekend if it's still standing lol
If it falls it's not going to hit anything but other trees back there

We left some birch trunk pieces laying around the edge of the yard and pileated woodpeckers tear them up along with the stumps that are ~6" above ground. They can do that much damage stat. It is hilarious to watch - chunks flying around, throwing them over it's shoulder. There's a reason they made the woody cartoons.

That's   one of  what I was thinking.

No chew marks. That's a burrowing animal, likely after food. Skunk. Ground hog. Maybe possum. Doubt it's a coon or squirrel. Porkies just eat the bark and we know what beaver's work looks like.

Occam's razor.

Unless you live a half mile or more away, or next to an interstate you'd know if it was a pileated woodpecker. They sound like a miniature jackhammer if they're hitting half solid wood.

Don't the arborists call those things widow makers? They don't fall laterally, they come straight down, often on the guy with the chainsaw.

There's a wicked video out there of a guy running like hell when a big tree started to collapse. He lived, but not by much.

It's called a barber chair, where the tree delaminates and the top half shears off and falls into the partial cut, sliding down vertically at which point it can go in any direction.

What's worse than the trunk of that tree is the dead limbs that can fall on you as your cutting. Not an expert here by any means but I was part of a off road crew "with out bucket trucks" for about 2 years when I was young trimming for the electric company. Low pay and dangerous!
