EDIT: Someone beat me to it.

Leslie Nielsen was a serious/drama actor and wasn't known for comedies prior to Airplane.

This. This right here is why the writers strike made absolutely no sense.

“AI is taking our jobs and using our material” also “The only thing we know how to do is recycle great older material and make it suck”

Pull all the woke, DEI filters off of AI and let’s get back to cinema that people want to see. And with the recent video AI news, we don’t even need actors with over-inflated senses of worth.

I think he will pull it off.  I remember this scene from the TV Show Atlanta.  This was after Liam said he wanted to kill an innocent black man after his friend was raped by a black man and he walked around for years with a weapon waiting on an opportunity to do so.  Then him showing up on this show and doubling down on it was great comedy.
Watch the whole scene:

Sad fact is what people say they want to see and what they actually pay to see. It’s been a reality in film forever that movies and shows based off of already established IP, be that  based off a book or comic, or sequel, are much more profitable in the long run. They are cheaper up front in marketing because they already have an established fan base. There are certainly examples of totally new IP being successful (Star Wars is the biggest I can think of) but overall truly original content does not pay off better. It’s a show business they are ultimately going to make what people will pay for.

His Pink Panther remakes were aweful. He should have felt shame.

Those types of comedies just can't be remade .

It's the best they can do now.

Rehashing old movies with worse actors and a woke script.

I have the original box set I refused to watch those out of principle.  But yeah I don't think anyone can hold a candle to Sellers.

All the anti-gun, anti-violence actors or entertainers should refuse to accept or participate in movies, plays, or shows that have any guns or violence in them.  Money talks and BS walks.

NEW YORK — Lt. Frank Drebin is back on the case.

Paramount Pictures is moving ahead with a long-gestating remake of “Naked Gun,” the studio announced Wednesday. Liam Neeson will star as the bumbling police detective Drebin in the role made famous by Leslie Nielsen.

Akiva Schaffer ("Hot Rod," “Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping”) will direct the film, set for release in July 2025. The script is by Dan Gregor, Doug Man and Schaffer, who collaborated on 2022's “Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers.”

Soorrry - that guy's not funny.

Oh, we've hated Neeson for quite a while. He did an interview where he said there are too many guns especially in America even though he's made a spectacular living being portrayed as a good-guy-with-a-gun.
