I assumed (and thought I remembered) seeing the traditional FN logo on these, but the few online photo references I’ve found all show the simplified logo like the Military Collector series. That includes this M16A2, which presumably was produced before our A4s. If anyone could confirm whether FN’s A4s always used the simplified logo, that would help me narrow down the details for my project. Thanks! |

I am absolutely loving the “musket” thread!
That’s what all the kids in my various units called the 20” rifles. They didn’t care much for them, but I always loved them. These are rifleman’s rifles! Great pics throughout, y’all! |

A note on magazine storage: a lot of the time, joes wouldn’t have a PX or anything like that on their little shitsplat FOB, so they’d improvise with what they had.
Case in point being my use of a standard MOLLE Rifleman’s Kit two mag pouch zip tied to the buttstock. Worked just as well as the store bought pouches, and had the advantage of being available. |

I still remember the horror of seeing Soldiers on Liberty in Baghdad that had duct taped a magazine to their buttstock. They were required to have a mag with them, and I guess they figured they were never going to have to use it. They were probably right. I won’t even talk about the starched uniforms...

I just ordered a barrel assembly from Windham Weaponry to do my third A2 clone. This one will have the basic round handguards and detachable carrying handle. The lower assembly is already build and the upper assembly is complete except for the barrel assembly.

I just finished up my basic M16A4 clone build. The barrel assembly is a Windham Weaponry A2 Government Profile 20in Barrel Kit. The A2 stock from White Oak Armament. The lower is an older PSA Stealth lower I had laying around from another build. Upper receiver and BCG are FN contract. Detachable carrying handle is from a Bushmaster A3 Target that I recently did a project with.

I love my A4, but my god is she a fat bitch. Never realized it until I built my new 3 gun rifle that weighs 5.5lbs.

In the interests of trying to clone an FN A4 as closely as possible, can anyone enlighten me on what forgings FN may have used for their uppers and lowers? The lower may be easy - I’m guessing I can just use any quality lower that doesn’t have a forge mark, unless someone has seen FNs with the Cerro keyhole.
From all the photos I’ve seen, the Military Collector M16A4 uppers all have the FN and Brass Aluminum (square) forge marks. It’s hard to tell in most photos, but it looks like military FN M16A4s have the FN and either the Anchor Harvey broken “A” or possibly Cerro mark. It looks like an FN upper with those markings would be very hard to come by. The OP stated (many years ago!) that later production M16A4s have M4 feed ramps. Is the front of the upper receiver marked with “M4” on those rifles? My apologies if any of these questions have already come up somewhere in this thread. I’m still trying to read through it all! |
