Any idea on the build date from the serial#?

Going by the top post of this thread, it appears that the 122XXX serial number dates from 1980. |

I'll add my SP1 to the list #0047x should be a 1964 model. 3 prong flash hider with bayonet lug. I've been told it has the Mattel stock and triangular forend. It is in great condition.
I'll have to review other post to get the nitty gritty on all the markings and parts for the list. Ken-TN |

S/N SP1466XX Marked AR15 Colt Firearms Division Colt Industries No Forward assist but has grooves in bolt carrier. bolt carrier marked "c" 2 position Collapsible Stock (metal) A1 handle CM Forging 16 inch Barrel Birdcage style flashhider Barrel marked C MP Chrome Bore Riveted Front swivel no shell deflector cal. 223 Large slotted front pin Also, when the bolt is locked open and you tap the buttstock (when its closed) the bolt will go into battery. Is this normal for this rifle because it is in very good condition and nothing looks to be worn. Looking for a build date and approximate value. Let me know if any more info is needed I have the rifle here. |

I saw an SP1 at a gunshow over the weekend. It was nice but well used. The serial was 73xxx and the guy said it was a 1977 as the table here suggests as well. The strange thing about it is it is a CH forge code slickside upper. There are not many CH on the list here at all. It was a plain jane 20" SP1 barrel was C MP Chrome Bore marked with a birdcage. The upper and lower color matched very well. I don't recall whether it was Patent marked or Firearms Division marked. It appeared original and the kid said it was his uncle's since new.

I recently acquired an SP1 that had been in the family for many years.
The serial # is 1828XX. Trapdoor stock Incorrect? round FHG Incorrect aftermarket pistol grip A colt rep. told me it was a 1982 build. I'm still compiling research and trying to learn about it. I will include a link to a photobucket slideshow that has all the pictures of it I've taken so far. There are some pics of other guns of mine in there also, just ignore them or enjoy them. s276.photobucket.com/albums/kk29/TurboRegal87/?albumview=slideshow Thanks, Jeff |

Here is my SP1:
Serial number - 1120XX The upper receiver is a slick side. It has a C M forging, a small faint square with a C and a triangle is visible forward of the ejection port. The ejection port cover has the rectangular detent. It also has the small R and arrow for the sight directions. The barrel is marked C MP CHROME BORE the chamber appears to be chrome plated and has an A1 bird cage flash suppressor. Front sight has a diamond with a B4 in it. The bolt is grey/black finished and is marked MP C and no markings on the extractor. The AR-15 bolt carrier is grey/black finished and has forward assist notches. The carrier is marked with a C. The screws on the gas key are staked from the sides. The firing pin looks like a standard AR15 type. The charging handle is grey with three notches on the latch. The buttstock is the trap door type without a drain hole screw. The rear sling swivel is a non swivel style. It also has the original cleaning kit still inside of it. The buffer has a dimple in the middle of the face and a non-pinned tube. The lower receiver pins and selector are the non-dimpled type and has touch up paint on mag release roll pin area. The hammer has a 3 inside of a circle and a C inside of a circle along with a notch on top. It also has a bobbed disconnector. The front sling swivel is plastic coated and is connected to the FSB by a rivet. The sling is black cotton canvas with black slide keeper and black buckle. The pistol grip has a C and an A inside of it. Handguards, buttstock and pistol grip have a flat non reflective finish that is slightly textured. I actually bought this rifle from Phessor in December 2007, and it is a beaut. A call to Colt's office confirmed it was built in Aug/Sept. 1979. (I thought it was 1980, based on the s/n and the current data base but it seems like the data base is a basic range, not exact as to when the gun was actually built by Colt.) This rifle has shot a couple of REAL 1/2" groups, 5 shots at 50 yards with the factory open sights, using Rem. UMC 55 grain FMC. Three of the rounds were touching/overlapped. I only had 20 rounds with me, but I left the range with a smile you couldn't grind off my face! hool Jeff GlockRocket34 |

SER SP1254xx
C M forging marks on upper receiver back by rear sight, with a very faint C in a small square toward the front end. There is not a Colt Verified Proof arrow. It does have the small splash of black paint on the bolt catch pin. The barrel is marked C MP CHROME BORE. A1 flash suppressor. There are no marks on the front sight tower (other than UP and the arrow for sight adjustment) or on the barrel between the barrel bands of the sight tower. The bolt and carrier are both black. The carrier is marked C and the key screws are double staked on the outsides. It does have the forward assist notches. The bolt is marked C MP. The charging handle is blacker than the receiver halves. Trap-door butt stock. The stock, handguards and pistol grip are black matte finish. I bought this rifle used in late 1984 or early 85 as a going away present to myself upon the ex-wife's departure, but did not receive a sling or cleaning equipment. The rifle has stuck around longer, and proven to be more dependable, than she was, but that's another story. It came with several 20-round magazines, some of which were Colt but I can't say if any of them were original or exactly how they were marked except they all had the GI metal followers. Very proud to say I paid the pricely sum of $450 for the rifle, a nice gun bag, half a dozen magazines and a couple hundred rounds of GI ball ammo. Should have bought a few more at that kinda prices |

Are any of the SP1's models equipped with a forward assist? If so what year did Colt start making them?
I purchased my SP1 in 1973 it probably got 10000 plus rounds through it and I took it out last night and off the bench rapid fire with a red dot it'll put most of the rounds into a 5" circle at 200 yards. Great shooter and I'm using it for yote hunting this year. Turk |

Very informative as well as articulate.I personally don't understand the recent trend/fad whatever of the previous early sp1 interest.I was under the impression they had quite a few teething problems, due to a number of reasons one of which was the 1 in 12 twist,as well as training from the M14,ammo etc.If someone could take the time to explain the recent popular intrest please explain. Thanks Joe

I recently acquired an SP1 Carbine, and the barrel looks just like that with the flash suppressor, but it isnt threaded on. it slips on and is welded around the muzzle crown inside the suppressor. Is that barrel 16", or shorter with a 5" flash suppressor on it? |

|
I bought my SP1 about 10 years ago, lot of use but it runs flawlessly. s/n is SP1 43510 which from my research makes it a 1974, but the front page of the thread indicated 1975.
When I got it it was a carbine with the coated aluminum colapsible stock, A1 upper, skinny 16" barrel, flat-side receiver but it does have fwd assist gizmo. The barrel had a heavy flash-hider thing about 4" long, I replaced this with an A1 flash-hider. My question is: Was this born a carbine? or did someone convert it from a 20" rifle way back when? |

Hi,
As you can see, new member. Have searched thru the forums and this seems to be the place to ask. Bought a new Colt SP1 carbine in the 80s. The only firearm in the house I can't find the receipt for. Any help on DOB etc would be appreciated. SP1 Carbine SN SP1669xx. Normal config with sliding stock, FA notches on bolt, birdcage suppressor. Big hammer(I think) showed it as Pre-ban, but I already know that cause there was no ban when I bought it new. |

Not sure if you are saying the first number is a 1 or a 6 If we go by the first page of this thread your serial number SP1-1669xx it is a 1982 production carbine. If the s/n is SP1- 669xx then it is a 1974 production. |

Remember, the serial number starts with an SP, not SP1. If your serial is SP143510 then you have a later 6 digit SP1. If so, and the stock/receiver ext nut is still origianally staked and coated, then theres a good chance it was originally a carbine. Otherwise, if the serial is SP43510 then it started life as a 20" rifle. |

I bought my little Carbine new in 1981 SN SP 1422xx. I know this doesn't jive with the database, but I have a picure of me holding it in 1981. The FSB has a C but I can't make out a bell anywhere. 16" Light barrel is marked C MP CHROME BORE right on the top. A1 flash hider has nut flats at 1 and 7 o'clock as seen from the back––its never been off. Rivetted front swivel. Small C in a square forward of the ejection port and C and M under rear sight. BC is marked with a C, has small rear non-FA tang and unshrouded firing pin. Pin is silver with no coating. Bolt says MPC. Buffer tube is factory staked with a little black glossy paint on left side notch. The black vinyl on the collapsing buttstock is peeling off a little on the butt plate. Looks like poor prep of the aluminum underneath when the vinyl was applied. I've never changed the front or rear sights and it shoots dead center at one hundred yards. Was this luck or good factory setup in those days?

Old Colt - Sounds like a nice carbine. I have a 151xxx SP1 and confirmed through Colt that it left the factory in November, 1981. If carbines and rifles used sequential serial numbers, which it appears they did, then 1981 seems to be correct for anything up to the high 150xxx's (or at least over 151xxx).

Serial # 357XX, no forward assist, Bolt is park and has assist cuts, lower receiver is slab/flat side no fence, sight has raised letters and arrow, flat slip ring, triangular hand guards, bird cage flash hider, trap door butt plate and only markings I can find are MP B on bottom of barrel near FSP

I know this is an old thread,, but i've owned my SP1 for about 6 years now, it's in amazing condition... Serial # SP16625x
Barrel marked C M, no forward assist, trap door buttstock, it came with a birdcage flash hider (I'm not the first owner). I attained a three prong flash hider as well, wanting a "Vietnam" stlye M16 semi-auto clone. What exactly was the army/marine issue Vietnam M16? |
|

The SP1 I have is S\N SP519XX, slab sided, 6 slot flash hider. Barrel stamped C MP chrome bore, FSB marked C with a triangle below. No markings on upper, lower marked Colt Patent Firearms.

Ser # 88477: Colt's Firearms Division marked lower, factory touch-up paint in BHO roll pin area. CM forge code on upper with boxed C and triangle proof stamps @ forward carry handle. Forged FSB with very blurry C under front sight and riveted front sling swivel. Barrel stamped C MP CHROME BORE with birdcage flash hider. Hammer stamped 2 in a C & circle C. Buffer has 3 flats. BCG is stamped C with forward assist cuts. Two stakes per gas carrier screw, firing pin retainer is a cotter pin. Bolt is marked MPC.
http://s103.photobucket.com/albums/m151/txarsoncop/SP1 If you're interested. On a somewhat related note could someone tell me why the BHO will no longer hold the bolt to the rear? It appears to be fine, there is nothing restricting it from it's complete range of motion (as far as I can tell) and both the BHO and the BCG appear to be in good shape.?. If I VERY carefully set the BCG to the rear it will hold but resetting the charging handle with cause the bolt to slam home. Any ideas? Pix below. bill |

I have SP1 164XXX. It has the 3 prong, triangle, no trap door, OD sling with metal ends.
