There's another exciting new product on the horizon for the AK.

Check this out:

It's the new Midwest Industries extended rail system for the AK.  I don't have all the details yet, just want we can glean from this picture.  I have one on the way and will post a full review once I have a chance to evaluate it.

Stay tuned!

Will it work with an Ultimak gas tube rail?

Does the cleaning rod still fit?

The Ultimak rail doesn't work with the MI railed lowers, at least on the current crop.  If you're a machinist, you could probably make it work, but it would take some work.

I don't know if the cleaning rod will fit or not, I don't have one in my hands yet.  I'll keep you posted, or Troy can chime in with an answer when he gets to a computer.

Would it work on a saiga, and does it come with the top guard, Id be interested in the bottom only if it fit a saiga, and doesnt need the normal ak retainer guard plates.

Is there a price estimate on these? I've been seriously considering putting a rail on my AK and was going back and forth between the MI and the Ultimak. I like the looks of the extended rail that Ultimak makes so was leaning in that direction... I may have to change my mind.

Is there a guestimate on the price yet since it is going to be set?  Also when will distributors be receiving them?

OK, the US Palm logo on the top rail is throwing me off...

What am I looking at here? MI makes the top rail for Palm?

Are the top and bottom rail sold together? Is the bottom rail an addition to any top rail? Some top rails?

More info, plz.

Edit - Is it a version of this design but with a longer bottom rail?MI universal AK47/74 rail

Hey Troy, have several of your rails on AK's and one on a Galil, about to add another one to my Krink.... love 'em!

Will this extended rail be available in Tan/FDE like the other ones are?  If so, I'm in.

Thanks.

Do you have a pic of this rail on a draco? I'm trying to decide if I should order the normal style, or wait for these....

I would love it if you had a long version that covered the lug. I would also like it to work with an Ultimak upper, but I could understand why it wouldn't. That being said, it looks great! Any thoughts on making one just a tad longer?

Out of curiosity, why would you want to run an Ultimak upper vs. a dedicated MI upper?  Do they not have a dedicated upper for your RDS of choice?

this, I guess if you already have an ultimak this makes sense, but its is MUCH cheaper to buy a dedicated MI upper handguard

I already have the ultimak upper. That's all, like I said, no big deal and I understand proprietary and all that, was really looking for a lower a tad longer.

Wow, an AK Rail System that doesn't look like shit, and actually looks functional!

NICE!

I thought Ultimak had an extended lower rail system, don't they?

yea, for over $200! I find it hard to justify the cost. If someone else wants to make one cheaper....

Sorry if this was asked already. I have the classic MI AK rail system, and I love it. Does the new longer bottom rail bolt up to the classic style top rail and if so, can I buy the new longer bottom rail by itself?

I really like where MI is going with this rail; it will be fantastic if it came in lighter than Ultimak alternatives. The only thing I want more is a top rail that will give users more flexibility in how they grip the rifle's handguard.

How would this rail system work with the from section of the hand guard retainer? Would it fit around it? Especially the front sling point.

It fits around it, but the sling loop portion will need to be removed. 2  minutes with a dremel.

The sling point or the rail system needs to be dremel?

You cut off the sling loop on the front of the lower handguard retainer.

So then you don't like ACE stocks? Leaves more for Saiga owners I guess, lol.

no I don't. I would prefer to add a 4.5 or a 5.5 if I'm going to make a permanent modification. Add something of value to the weapon.

Yeah, too late.  We had a 5 or 6 page thread of begging MI to make this thing in there industry sub-forum, they were very up front before it was even off paper that the sling loop would have to go.
Suits the hell out of me personally, I use QD sling attachments, luckily there are getting to be a lot of options for AK owners these days. :)

Value is entirely subjective in this case. An ACE folder can add the same, if not greater ergonomic capability to an AK than an AK-100 folder. This rail gives much needed handguard real-estate to the AK, and as mentioned above, there are uncountable number of rail-mounted sling loops.

As I think about it, there are many ways to fix the problem. Ultimately, I'll have to see the final product to really decide whether I like it or not.

My take on this, it needs to have the optic portion of the rail mounted over the topcover dog leg style off the lower front handguard. Also with a rail that close to the gas tube- it will eventually exceed the heat duration of most optics. It also needs to have the upper rail QD from the lower for cleaning. Finally, needs to be underfolder and sidefolder applicable while allowing the cleaning rod to be attached. Not impressed with much of anything produced for AK rifles in the USA but I have a few ideas that I might try to work with some manufacturers on.

It's better than the single most popular solution, the Ultimak, and people still seem to luuuuv the Ultimak. At least it doesn't touch the gas tube at all. And there are already a couple dogleg/dust cover mounts. MI making one would be redundant.
