On the heels of my rattlesnake thread two weeks ago my dogs flushed out a rattler that then bit my brothers dog on the nose. Seeing as how my war dog Rusty pulled the bastard out and flung him to a trash pile where my brothers dog got bit, I am lucky neither of mine were bit. Jake was digging at the back entrance.

Smokie is OK (this happened Sunday, he got the $900 anti-venom shot and an overnighter) but is back and doing pretty good.

I believe there is a den under and old buried half section of pipe that has another entrance about 10 feet away. The pipe was / is part of a hokey retaining wall. Think snake den like in True Grit.

Short of digging the thing up with live snakes (who knows how many), I want to poison the den and then see what needs to be done.

Any suggestions from those with experience?

My brother said the ones he has are Northern Pacifics, not Westerns or Canebrakes.

I'd pour gas down the hole if they're a problem, then stand by with a shovel.  That will probably get you a felony in CA, though.

Pump sprayer full of gasoline and kill them when they come out. Don't light it on fire, the gas is just to drive them out of the den.

Gasoline fumes are what the snake hunters use to flush them out.

Throw a coffee can full of gas in. Wait a safe distance away with a .22 revolver full of rat shot.

While not exactly something that the supporters of Earth Day would endorse, dumping gasoline down the hole followed by a lit match will make things lively, albeit briefly so.

You don't really want a bunch of burning snakes taking off through the grass though.

Or maybe you do.

Either flood it or pump car exhaust into it.  The former is more effective.  Wait at the entrance(s) with shot shell.

ETA:  Glad your dude is on the mend.

In the summers when I was going to college I worked for the borough I grew up in and that's what we did when we were clearing all the brush that built up around the reservoir that hadn't been cleared in years, there were several rattlesnake and copperhead nests. It worked like a charm but we also had 12 gauges in case of pissed off flaming snakes escaping from the hole too. I loved the smell of burning snake in the afternoon, it smelled like...victory.

I would be careful, or at least discrete, about pouring gasoline onto or into the ground in California...

Pump it full of gas, light it on fire, shoot anything that slithers out and cement over what's left.

Based on what may or may not be my direct experience, they writhe and twist in place before dying.

Methyl Bromide is also very effective, but not nearly as entertaining.

for a fairly sealed up area, I used to back my tractor up and put a hose from the exhaust into rat tunnels in the barn.  You would smell dead rats a few days later.

I am thinking along the lines of a poison gas bomb and packing dirt into where any smokes comes out and after the proper amount of time digging the whole fucking thing up so no cement and no fire.

Would those gopher bombs kill them?

First thought is buy a case of foam cups and a couple gallons of gas. Break up cups into pieces and slowly mic in until the viscosity of thin molasses. Pour into hole and light.

Then I saw you were in CA.

A northern pacific rattlesnake den could be a few snakes or a hundred or more.

Best quit letting the dogs goof with them.  A big one (they get huge in NorCal) can kill a dog.

Go to the pool supply store and get some muriatic acid and dump that the hole.  Or throw a bag of powdered chlorine mixed with brake fluid into the hole.

The den has to go, but you are right about not letting the dogs mess with them. The entrances look like squirrel holes so we didn't see what was happening until reality struck.

Sounds like it's not near your house... and maybe not near to much flammable stuff? Gasoline, get some large tarps and cover the area of pipe they can get in and out of, pour a couple gallons of gasoline in there and put some bricks / sandbags etc. on the edges of the tarps to keep them down. Bug bombs work too btw.

These people saying gas... just NOPE

use diesel instead and light it... much less kaboom

Also use a weed sprayer to do it so you don't draw attention plus it lets you shoot it further...
