What happens when you combine modern bullet technology with this old timey baller of a cartridge? To find out, @chopinbloc hits the range with a Marlin Model 1895 Trapper loaded with Hornady's .45-70 325gr FTX LeveRevolution.
Could This Be The Ultimate Velociraptor Load?.45-70 325gr FTX LeveRevolution In case you missed it! .45-70 HSM 430gr +P RNFP Gel Test A Beast of a Cartridge! .45-70 HSM 430gr +P RNFP Gel Test |

Since Velociraptor was roughly the size of a large turkey, I'm going with something in 12 gauge.

HSM load is more better!
eta: I hate the short brass hornady uses. |

I dunno....
If I was headed at a velociraptor, I think I would want those 12G fin-stabilized “mini grenades” with an RDX filling: http://www.defensereview.com/auto-assault-12-shotgunfrag-12-high-explosive-round-comboweapon-system/ http://www.defensereview.com/1_31_2004/FRAG%2012.pdf Maybe it’s octanol, or PBX, but even with the real, “turkey-sized” Velociraptor or Jurassic Park version, boom is more than inert slug. High explosives FTW! |

Wtf That’s a 60lbs (ish?) cousin. As for the movie type.....12 gauge 00# with magazines all the way |

1650fps with a 425gr?
That's .308 territory, but he acts like he's shooting a cannon. |

I think I know what I will grab for when the Boston Dynamics truck shows up at the curb.

If you watch in slo mo, there's a flash of light inside the gel block following by smoking out of the entrance hole.
I'm pretty sure that's caused by a collapsing cavitation bubble which produces light and heat. First time I've seen that happen in a gel block. |

It's actually dieseling. A small amount of the flammable gel is vaporized by the hit and ignites as pressure increases inside the collapsing temporary cavity.

Velociraptors were about the size of peacocks (shhh... that movie lied). Turkey loads would probably be great.

I shot a 250 to 275 pound boar 4 times with the 325 grain FTX load and got no exits. 1st shot broadside at 35 yards, next 2 40 to 50 yards straight through the nuts running away, 4th shot broadside at 55. I was fairly underwhelmed to be honest. Still love the gun. Wish I had it setup for a suppressor.

I shot a deer with a Guide Gun/Hornady 325's. It made a mess, really too much for deer.

I hope you know the gummy tip hornady bullets are nothing new. They have great Range but they do a lot of damage to meat and don’t have the same bone breaking capacity of a hard cast load.
When I hunt (sbl) I have 405 hard cast in the gun and 325 gummies in the ammo holder on the stock. I hunt with factory ghost ring sight. So if I need to shoot past 200 I put a gummy round in. I can hit 5/5 at 400 with the gummies ona 16” target. . My 405 loads have twice the drop a tryst range. |

Is the unburnt powder/cavitation flash in the gel being discussed somewhere or is this public knowledge that I didn't know about?

I recall a few years ago trying a half dozen rounds of that ammo in an 15" Encore pistol. With the walnut and rubber grip, it was....lively.
