I liked things about both.
Tombstone captured more of the color and dash of boomtowns, but was really corny in the "Heroicness" of the Earps. The Old West dialogue was excellent in Tombstone, and completely lacking in Wyatt Earp. Wyatt Earp characterized Earp better as a cold, calculating and morally ambiguous man, but the set design and costuming was out of a 50s oater. Doc Holliday was Kilmer's best role, and made the movie. Dennis Quaid played a much more accurate and realistic Holliday. The romance between Earp and Josie was handled better in Wyatt Earp. Joanna Going was more age appropriate(and slutty) The Vengeance Ride was pretty well done by Costner, and a disaster in Tombstone. I wish you could shuffle both like a deck of cards. |

Costner was good in Silverado and open range, but this isn't a question. Tombstone by a mile. Disagreement means you vote for communists.

Tombstone had better outlaws, better actors, better script, better plot, better camera work, and better action.
I watched both recently, and except for a couple of scenes, I forgot how bad The Costner movie was. |

Tombstone as someone already pointed out above is a typical Hollywood Buddy movie. Wyatt Earp was more epic but they could have found a better actor than Costner. An educated man...  I had a buddy recommend this to me: Watch Wyatt Earp. Then stop the DVD or BlueRay or whatever when he arrives in Tombstone. Watch all of Tombstone. Then resume Wyatt Earp at the point Earp leaves Arizona. |

I really like Kevin Cosner and all the other actors in Wyatt Earp, but Tombstone told the story so much better.
Tombstone is the 'Shootout at the OK Corral' movie that all others will have to live up to from now on. |

Wyatt Earp for me was the better of the 2. I watched Wyatt Earp 1st sonthat might have something to do with it but I like the actors and acting better in it. I also like the fact it gives a more complete story about the man. It isn't just about the shoot out, it builds the story better then goes on after.

Tombstone by far. It is definitely the classic. The cast was tops and the script brilliant. Wyatt Earp was a one time watch movie. Tombstone is a "break out the popcorn every time you watch" type of movie.

Quaid's Doc was the only thing about W.E. that I did not care for.
Was kind of pulling for B.N.K. when she fired the revolver. They're both good movies, one is about a small part of W.E.'s life, and the other, much more detailed. The scene in W.E. where Wyatt explains to the wives why they don't rate as high as the brothers, and the end scene, when Earp and Josie are on the ship,,,  Marshall Earp Saves Tommy ORourke.wmv I do prefer Wyatt Earp.  I saw this in the theater and at first people chuckled but by the end they were rolling in the aisles and cheering. Also, wasn't the shootout at the OK Corral meticulously duplicated? |
