I remember looking at them when new. There was some regulation regarding importation that it could NOT be a truck. The rear seats had to be welded in to make it a "passenger car".
I did have a Subaru GL coupe. Early subarus tended to dissolve in salt quickly. Those that didn't had leaking head gaskets or burned a lot of oil. I had another one that burned about a quart of oil in 200 miles! |

They were popular, just could not last due to the shitty steel that rusted through in about three or four years.

Lady down the road had one just like the second picture. It had a 4 speed manual.

If I've ever seen a Subaru Brat in person, I don't remember it.
I do remember this, though: Kidd Video Intro |

Today those jump seats would be a No-go. They were cool back in the day.

Lesbians don't like weiners so I'm not surprised it wasn't one of the better selling Subaru vehicles.

Buddy had a Brat in college. Brat was great in Michigan Winters, and a lot of fun to cruise the back country roads after a snowfall. Never got stuck.

According to wiki:
President Ronald Reagan owned a 1978 BRAT until 1998, which he kept at his ranch near Santa Barbara, California. The vehicle has since been restored and returned to the ranch, which is now owned by the Young America's Foundation. View Quote |

Back in the day, those were really cool for a brief period. Probably the only thing really working hard against them was that buying a Subaru back then wasn't viewed as a good thing....
But yeah, everyone keeps trying the idea. The Brat, the El Camino, the Ute, the Ridgeline..... |
|

The only downside to owning one of them was having to tell your parents you were a lesbian

A buddy bought one in the early 90s. It had been used hard, I did some basic maint to it and drove it to him. fucker impressed me more, shithouse solid chassis feel, meh motor.First of only a few suburus I have been in . Brats were a FU to DOT long ago.I like that

I worked with a guy who had one a long time ago. It was tiny and tinny. I thought it was a POS.
|
|
I remember a guy at my old high school who would pick up his girlfriend in one. He had a AR-15 hanging in the back. 1986 or so…
|
|
My buddy's dad in elementary school had one, and I got to ride in the back a couple times. Was very cool.

All the 70s/80s mini pickups (Brat, Dodge Rampage, Chevy Luv, Datsun pickup, VW Rabbit pickup) were cool even though almost all of them rotted away into dust.

Longer bed than a lot of new small trucks. Thing would probably do alright now. Much like the AMC Eagle wagon they were before their time
|
|
One of my Scout masters had one. It was cool. But we were not far away from WWII and
many people hated anything from Japan. |
|
They're supposed to be bringing the Brat back in 2023, though no jump seats.
|
|
Was a local one in high school ('88-ish). Owner had lifted it somehow like 6" with "little" swampers on it. Thing looked awesome!
|
|
Reminded me that there used to be a similar Dodge Rampage / Plymouth Scamp and the VW Rabbit pickup.

My first car was a 1981 Subaru GL 4 door sedan. I got it in 1990 but had to give it up when the clutch went less than a year later. The trunk floor was largely rusted out. The metal in the body that wasn't rusted out was quite a bit more substantial than what you'd find in a Nissan or Toyota of that vintage.

I remember watching this commercial in my youth.
Subaru Farm Boy |

I wanted one badly in '78, but I was an E2 squid and $3800 bucks (new) was just out of the question.
|
|
My dad bought me a brand new Brat in high school in 1987. 4wd and t-tops whats not to like? But you could floor the thing and it would still lose speed going up a hill. Not sure it even had 100 hp.

View Quote I had one of those..Subaru XT Turbo. That car handled like it was on rails and would haul ass...lots of fun in the snow. |

It's like an El Camino that wasn't fed when it was a baby and grew up stunted.

My dad had one for a short time in the late 80's. I remember thinking it was the awesomest vehicle ever but the one we had was a piece of junk.

I had one, can't remember what year but it was a fun little car to scoot around in.
