That game was cake compared to Battletoads.

No game tests a boy's perserverence like Battletoads. None.

I never did finish the game but I'm pretty sure I got past the underwater level.  It was, as you say, awful.

The basic game was fun but like most NES games, you begin to wonder if they were ever play tested before release.

This is the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. I think that game gave me permanent anger issues.

Think I only made it past the hover cycles a handful of times on battle toads. I remember playing the turtles too but not sure how far we got. Hard games kept us busy so the parent could run off and have sex.

There's a dude on YT that does a series call debunking the difficulty.

He breaks down how to beat that game without much effort. It's a good watch for anyone that got smoked by that game repeatedly as a kid.

I was watching a youtube video showing some bugs in the game.  In the underwater section, the hitboxes for the turtle and the seaweed and the spinning enemies dont match up with the sprites.

The hit boxes for that area are fucked up. You can't beat it without taking damage, so you have to plan ahead.

Be sure to fire up ghosts and goblins, but don't tell them about the illusion. Then fire up mega man and let them figure out the order. Castlevania might be good to.

I'm quite a bit older, but those games were really hard.

I suppose the closest analog to hard games in mainstream are the Souls series, but even those become cake after you figure out the systems and farm a levelling area for a bit.

I have, however, just started playing Hell Let Loose. It is not newbie friendly lol.

More like learn how to rage without any chemical supplements.

Old school video games helped kids get ready for adult levels of pissed off and frustration.

Make sure they play it on the actual console so that when it crashes repeatedly, they can learn to appreciate the ability to save progress on modern games.

I remember doing all kinds of voodoo to make my NES games work. We did everything from blowing on the cartridge to putting it in the freezer

Early console games used the same progression and difficulty strategies as arcade games, which were programmed to get kids to continually pump quarters into them.

Most modern games have far more opportunities to save and reset rather than start all over again every time.
