Heroes serve a purpose, often many purposes in a story.
But what kind of a story do you have when you don't have a physical antagonist? Someone who is dumb, crazy or just plain mean enough to move the story forward. I realize that IRL villains and probably a few bad guys from novels might find their way into a discussion like this. I just specify movie villains to limit the scope somewhat. |

Godzilla. We don't give a shit that he's crushing and burning cities, while killing tens of thousands of people. He's OUR guy.

I learned a long time ago the bad guy was always the most interesting character. Un-inhibited, original, able to do things nobody else would try. Heroes always have to do the right thing. Of course, that's why anti-heroes like Mal from Firefly, or Han Solo, or Hancock (Will Smith in the first part of the movie) are such an attraction.
Hans Gruber from Die Hard comes to mind as one of the best. Darth Vader before Lucas neutered him? edit: beaten like a mule a couple times while composing my reply |

Not a really complex personality, but a fantastic representation of the 'true believer.' The true believer is a particularly frightening archetype.
