So many good ideas...I love getting things for my kids in the hopes it leaves a good memory.
Someone mentioned buying AR parts and building a rifle together. That is a great idea. If you have already done that, than yea a nice handgun, knife, watch, or something else he might be able to have and use for years to come. |

Gift for graduation of High School?
Damn, I got screwed at every turn. I was told to get a job and go to college OR get my own place to live. |

An heirloom that he can pass to his son like a nice over and under shotgun.

My dad gave me his IBM retirement Rolex when I hit 30 in 1993. I wore it for 25 yrs, had it serviced and gave it to my son for his high school graduation.
His smile was priceless. He cherishes it and wears it on special occasions. |

Possessions are fleeting, give him the best possible advice a young man can receive, especially from a trusted older male, to wit:
If it flies, floats or fucks, it is always more satisfying and always much cheaper to rent. |

Some good suggestions mentioned. Ill agree with a Colt 1911 , Colt SAA , Colt M4 . I like Colts . A nice Beretta pistol . I like Beretta’s . All the stuff mentioned has US Army heritage as well . A nice watch that doesn’t have a ridiculous price. I like Tudor . Look at a some of their dive/gmt stuff or the Ranger . A Georgia Precision rifle ? Good luck and congratulations to your boy .

Quoted: This is the answer. I don't understand GD's desire to give gifts for every occasion. And OP you have zero say in his deciding to join the Army. View Quote You're not wrong. He asked me the other day for a photo of a tattoo I have. I dissuaded that but he wants the same tattoo. It's a blue and white striped tat and he ain't earned that. I am not going to tell him not to join the Army, but I will say i wouldn't recommend it. He's my son, and I am proud of him, but that tells me he ain't ready. |

My youngest son likes revolvers so I got him a Blackhawk for his graduation.

My kid graduated last year, I got him a Henry .357 lever action. He wanted a lever action and I already have ARs for the family. Sucks he can’t buy his own ammo for 3 more years.
Waiting on a medical waiver for him to enlist USAF… the M4A1 clone I built will be officially his when he graduates basic. |

Quoted: Me and my dad went out and got me my very first gun that was all mine before I left for Ft Benning. Still my main go to for the last 15 years. https://i.imgur.com/jj8EdAX.jpg View Quote Very nice. My first purchase was a kabar for my dad and he didn't give a rats ass. There's a reason I asked about all this. I am fully committed to being a better father than I had. |

I had the bad habit of comparing myself to my grandfather (2nd wave at Normandy and battle of Bastogne.) What was the point in trying to be a badass? |

Quoted: He's a lot like me, so it simplifies things. AR, handgun, shotgun? What would you give your kid upon graduation? Also he wants to join the Army, I was in the Army and I don't want that for him. View Quote Your kid should listen to the old man |

View Quote I'm not gonna click on that. I joined the year he was born, 05. So kinda cool if you liked shooting the fuck outta anything that moved or getting blown up. I really can't recommend that he follow that. My own country hates me because of my skin color, he ain't gonna get a pass. |

Think I got it figured out. Two 18" A1 stocked AR's . I don't how to make that special without some engraving but it would at least be a matching pair.

Have the lower engraved with name and date of graduation. If he's really outdoorsy, a custom knife engraved. Lots of good makers on this site, I've bought from a few. |

Quoted: A watch ETA, what I got was an all expenses paid trip to college (I was very fortunate that pops did pretty well for himself, and that he valued a quality education. At the end of 6 years, the total cost for everything, tuition, room and board, was just north of $40k. And that was even out of state tuition), and a ride to campus, where I was promptly kicked out of the car. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47937884751_b02867bc03_h.jpgTurtle Behind The Wheel by FredMan, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53141441124_ce68e85df9_b.jpgSeiko SNE573 by FredMan, on Flickr View Quote I would not give him that even if he was a gay. |

Quoted: Yeah, you're right... giving gifts is for emo pussies. View Quote No pussies here. We walked uphill 6 ways to get to school and back, fed dirt and belly button lint. The only clothes we had we stole from the homeless people. I wore a horse blanket I sewed into a suit till I was 30. |

My Dad bought me a large Craftsman tool set (this was in the 90s). While I didn't fully appreciate it at the time, that same tool set is in my garage 30 years later and I use it all the time.
