very nice SP1...LOVE the green furnature...is it totally original?

Not original, built it from parts.  Aiming for a clone of a 601 circa 1960, earliest production SP1's date from 1963.

I've finally (almost?) finished 2 of my oldie projects........

First is an XM-607 clone on a SGW Palmetto lower........(Thanks to WA Tom for the butt/charging handle/handguards. He also did the 11.5 bbl. This gun runs with a Broadhead auto sear...has an AAC cyclic rate reducer and KNS anti rotation pins.)

The Model 601 Replica is all Colt save for the WA Tom charging handle and (I must apologize till I find something slick-sided) Bushy A2 lower........

Who has a Delft scope and mount they're gonna sell me for this one?

Well guess I can over look the A2 lower receiver on you 601, considering that you have the correct upper receiver.  I used a later one on mine, but at least it does not have the forge code on it.

What barrel did you use on the 601?

Nice set of handguards, still having a heck of a time finding any in good shape.

Good luck on the Deft scope, LOL.

Yeah, same here.  I did use a older non chrome one though.  The 1/14's are around though.  That guy that was selling those old Air Force uppers apears to have had one or two, with green handguards and all.  I know who got one, but he won't write me back, I am going to E-mail him again......

$375 for REPRO's!?!?!?!? GEEZ! i think i'll stick with the CAR stock and MAYBE the triangular carbine handguards...

Judging by that black-eye, I take it you have never shot with one of them. They are worth it. I have shot both in semi and full auto with these stocks, and I can tell you they are the most comfortable AR15 stocks I have seen. Extended, they bring the length to that of an A1 stock. Collapsed, they bring the length to that of a "stubby" stock. When calculating the cost of these stocks, you have to realize they are machined by hand (not CNC) and they are a LOT more complex to manufacture than a modern telestock that sells for $100-200 less.

you're right..i've never used or even seen one of those stocks in real life. but still...$375 each...thats a heck of a lot of money...you could buy a complete SP1 upper for that...

Here's mine, a 1968 according to the serial number.  Dad bought it back in the 80's for $400, unfortunetly it's got a Colt military M16A1 upper.  Which reminds me, anyone know where I can get a correct upper for it?  I beleive it would take the slab side Air Force upper, with bird cage hider, but would have not had a chromed bolt carrier but a phosphated slab side correct?

A 1968 Sporter would have a slab sided big hole upper with no forge code, barrel would probably be marked C MP C.  Would think that it could have either flash hiders.  Bolt carrier would have forward assist cuts and be unmarked.  Bolt would be marked MP and would not have an extractor buffer.  Check your bolt group out, you might still have the correct one.  Good luck finding a 1968 upper, a later one would be much easier to find, like this one, and it is real cheap:

Yeah, I saw that upper notice I'm the second poster in the thread.  I'm not looking for an original '68 upper, but one that matches closley.  I beleive I do have the original bolt group by your description, the carrier is unmarked, bolt says MP and I remember it not having an extractor buffer.  Good to know it could have either FH, I prefer the look of the 3 prong over the bird cage.  One other thing, would the butt stock be the type with trap door, or without?

The bird cage flash hider was approved in late 67, but I would guess they old flash hider was still used for awhile.

No trap door on the buttstock.

The bird cage was supposed to be approved and in production before there was ever such thing as a M16A1.  But, I would think it possible for a M16A1 to leave the factor with a three prong.

In the photo on page 6 of Kennedy, what model does he have , 601 or 602. I noticed it has the duckbill flash hider and triangular CH of the 601, but has black furniture of the 602. Did some later 601's have black furniture?
Link Posted: 4/6/2005 5:46:05 AM EDT

Based on Kennedy's assassination date, the rifle in question should be a 601.  The flash hider would be a good clue.  The green furniture can be hard to spot in photos, in that it can appear black.  I doubt anybody know exactly when Colt's went from green to black.

I thought maybe  it was green furniture that looked black in the photo but I compared it with the green curtains in the background and the furniture still appears black. I downloaded the large version of that pic which shows a LOT more detail. In reality I am building a 601 clone and am having a hard time finding decent green furniture and I saw that pic and am trying to use it as a basis for keeping the shiny black furniture I have and still being correct!

Is that the one with the General holding a cross bow?  If so, that is a very early Colt's AR-15, and would bet that is green furniture.  It can be hard to see, I have the Tokoi book, and it has quite a few green furniture AR-15's in it, and they all apear black in the book.

I had some doubts on wether or not some of the AR-15's in the Tokoi book were green.  Tokoi took the pictures at the MOD Pattern Room.  Stottman was there just recently and he said they were indeed green, and that most of Tokoi's pictures showed the rifles much darker then they are in person.

Same thing with the plum furniture on AK-74 rifles, they usually look black in pictures.

Ekie, what's that hole in the pivot pin on your M16A1 clone?  Is that what's actually correct for a mid- to late-1960s Colt M16A1, as opposed to the "solid head" pivot pins of today?  Thanks.

Hey good eye.  Is not be correct for a mid 70's M16A1, which this is supposed to be.  It is correct for a mid 60's XM16E1 though.  Will end up on my XM16E1 clone, but that project is a long ways off.

Thank God -- I'd never seen one of those before, and was afraid I was gonna have to hunt one down for my clone build.

So while we're discussing minute parts details, are there any differences between the magazine catch (not the button) that would be correct for a late-1960s Colt M16A1 and a magazine catch of today?  To me it looks like there are some minor differences between the 1960s-era Colt M16A1 magazine catches and the current ones, but I may just be imagining things.

Concerning m16a1 and birdcage FH, I've spoken to a 25th ID veteran who served in 1969 and the birdcage was standard on ALL m16 type rifles(xm16e1 and m16a1) by that time in the army in his AO. He had both types of rifles(a beat up xm16e1 and later a new m16a1) and birdcages were on both. I would assume they just replaced any existing 3 prongs with the birdcage.

That is what I understand, that the old flash hiders, chromed parts, buffers, and all that were all replaced by then.
