I took advantage of the warmer temps today and got out the krylon. Haven't pulled the trigger on painting the cqbr blockii yet, but this is a step in the right direction. Simple stripes have become my go-to pattern.

To be honest i don't know. His order comes in from KAC this week likely (gov shutdown delayed the transfer). It will be whatever the latest production is and if KACs pics are current it will all be fde.

I can let you now when he sends me a pic this week.

He ordered 6 of each. 5 black and 4 taupe left if his memory is right.

Same. I was lucky to get in a ride at all today. Rain/sun/rain/sun all day.

As long as it isn't absolutely pouring I'm still going shooting tomorrow tho.

After a little research and finding another one posted in the ee, I believe I have an older 10.3" bushmaster HB on this build. I never knew that bushmaster offered 10.3" barrels back in the 90's. Pretty cool.

Can't remember if this one has been posted yet. I think it has been, I just now realized what rail he had. Another gg&g 1201. Looks like he's got an arms #40 std rear sight. Plus he's got the 551 and a sweet set of peltor's. He's got great taste!

Got my new Knight's RIS today from Operation Parts. Subtle differences between it and the RAS.

It has a manufacture date of 05/15/2017.

According to the instructions, the locking tab rests atop the front handguard retaining cap, which is opposite of what you do with the RAS. Do you think I read that before trying to install it? I spent almost 45 min fighting with it, trying to coax it in with oil and tapping it lightly (gouging the inside of the rail on the teeth of the barrel nut in the process) before I finally figured out I was doing it wrong... Jimminy Christmas. Once I put the locking tab over the retaining cap, it dropped in like Steve Caballero from Bones Brigade in an empty swimming pool. Is that analogy too dated?

Good catch... far as I know, the bottom should be numbered backward; also, 1-15 like the top, not 14-28. Since it's "new" production, maybe KAC only produces the top rails and includes RAS bottom rails now?

Yup, you got an ris top, and an ras bottom. Make sure the bottom starts with the low numbers towards the delta ring.

Yeah normally I would say screw it/roll with it. But dude payed over $350 for it, it should damn well be a matched pair for that price. Its a $150-$200 rail IMO lol. Especially with a RAS lower

@AZ_SBR: I think the locking tab on the ris should be under the handguard retainer. Then when you turn the screw, it applies upward pressure to lock it in place. That's how I've installed mine, and have seen others installed that way. When installed in the manner just described, it locks up tight and pushes the top and bottom half together, securing the bottom half in place. Gotta have a degree in rocket surgery just to install an ris.

ETA-Mines a lil saltier. I had no idea they were still making the ris in 2017. For some reason I just assumed they stopped production once the ras came along.  Note the numbering on my bottom half.

The instructions say to place the tab on top of the handguard cap for the RIS.

ETA: Trying to find some illustrated instructions posted online and got beat :\.

[Last Edit: AZ_SBR] [#38]
I took a picture of the included instruction for this step. It reads: The Lock [though the diagram refers to it as a Locking Clamp] must be ON TOP of the forward handguard cap before pivoting the RIS into position.

When I tried it the other way initially, the rail was getting hung up in the rear. It was making contact with the teeth of the barrel nut and not dropping into place. There's a thin groove on the inside at the back of the rail which fits snugly over the teeth on the barrel nut, but for the life of me, I couldn't get it to line up. The front would start out in the correct position, but as I lowered the rail in the rear, it wouldn't stay fully seated under the forward handguard cap causing the back end to make contact in the wrong spot and not go into place. It got chewed up to the point where the teeth were eating into the aluminum and there were unpleasant grinding sounds

I have an email into KAC to inquire about the lower rail. MILSPEC's right, I paid a pretty penny for this from an authorized KAC distributor. It should come with the right parts, not a half-assed combo "because close enough..."

@AZ_SBR: I think the locking tab on the ris should be under the handguard retainer. Then when you turn the screw, it applies upward pressure to lock it in place. That's how I've installed mine, and have seen others installed that way. When installed in the manner just described, it locks up tight and pushes the top and bottom half together, securing the bottom half in place. Gotta have a degree in rocket surgery just to install an ris.
The instructions say to place the tab on top of the handguard cap for the RIS.

Aha. My rocket surgery degree must've expired. I’m pretty sure I had mine installed incorrectly then. Damn things.

question for anyone: is there a such thing as a legit su231 that can be acquired by legal means? I just found a sweet real deal su231 and want to be sure that they are legally available.

Recently ordered my taupe NT4 from Pre Sample Depot. He is looking into this for me as well. Fingers crossed for a non coated latch and will attempt to strip or swap of it comes coated.

Yes they are acquired by legal means.  I bought dozens of (SU-231/PEQ) marked and unmarked SU231s both tan and black from distributors and sold them retail in the store I was working in.  HERE is an 8year old thread confirming what I am saying.

Awesome. I figured, like most accessories, that they would become available for civilian purchase. Just a few pages back I remember a lot of talk about illegal ones being sold. The one I found is a legit issued su231 with blank hood, yellow sticker,  barcode sticker, and su231 engraving from 2009. Looks like I'll be back in the 553 game. Had to trade my 511 to get it, but I'm happy. Somethin about the 553 just looks at home on a block ii.

Awhile back I picked up a WMX fixed body kit, came across a rotational body and picked that up so i could have a proper setup. Was just looking at it and noticed the rotational body doesn’t have the laser etched information/QR code on it, is this normal or did i get scammed on a fake body? Attachment Attached File

Honestly, I don't really even think about lighting. Mine are 25% lighting and 75% Photoshop fix after the fact, lol. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I definitely don't rely just on raw photo quality alone (with an antique camera I can't ;p).

About the only time I give much consideration to lighting is when shooting on a white BG. A white BG is a lot less forgiving - you can fudge things a bit more when no one knows for sure what the background color is supposed to be. When the background needs to be crispy white and no shadows, you're also limited by how much you can correct the subject (or the BG for that matter). Half the time outdoors, I forget about taking pictures until the sun is too low and it's almost dark. Sometimes I can squeeze enough light out to make a decent picture and sometimes I can't.

ETA: All clean and shiny.

Almost all my photos are taken with a shitty 10-year-old-plus Canon Powershot A2000IS with a meager 10MP sensor (you can get one for about $30 bucks today, lol). So, all things considered, I think they turn out pretty decent. That being said, I really need to invest in a DSLR. There is only so much you can do with such a dated camera.

Anyway...

Probably one of my favorites:

A white posterboard usually makes for a good background (as long as you get the lighting right or can edit it in Photoshop). I always seem to decide to take pictures on a white BG when the lighting is less than ideal, and then end up correcting it as much as possible in PS.

Of course, I'm always a fan of plunking it down in your brass after shooting:

I over think everything.
Your pics look so damn clean. How are you guys getting such good lighting?

@krdt I purchased one of those N1 clone stocks from MA Parts and got it in today. I threw it in my rifle and I have to say... I'm surprised at how small a stock it is lol. The SBA3 brace on my pistol feels more comfortable. I only got it because I love the look of yours and we all know looks are 8/10ths of the rifle ammirite! I guess you get used to it huh? Once I have the stamp for my Mk18 build I'll be able to contribute. I think I have the major stuff right.
