I think you'll find that the mini-recce is the un-clone. So use what works for you. If you want a pod, put one on. I have one on there in the pic, but I tend to just put it on when I need it, I don't leave it on there. It interferes with the AFG on there.
So do what works for you and let the mission drive your gear.

Gotcha, I'd assumed that the mini recce role required the use of a pod but I saw many builds here without one so I figured I'd ask to see a consensus of sorts.

Threw the S&B on there for a pic.

I've received some PMs and y'all have me considering the NX8 F1 again. Not a fan of the reticle at 8x, but with the mil version I could just zero to the fine cross hair under the dot. Length and weight and day light brightness outweigh the cons. I don't shoot 3-gun and don't need max FOV at 1x like the Razor or Swaro/Kahles. Having realistic expectations of it's limitations, I think it's a good choice for the 13.7 build.

Awesome rifle

It’s not difficult to shoot precisely with the NX8 center dot. You can also just use a ballistic calculator to figure out your holds using the mil hash marks, and is not necessary to zero using anything below the dot.

Mil reticle is the way to go imo because the reticle is far less cluttered.

Just my 2 cents

Shot using NX8 on a 14.5

Is anyone using a Geissele MK16 10.5" on a 12.5" barrel?

I just bought a 12" rail and it turns out the actual length is closer to 13". With the barrel in the upper i measured that a rail with exactly a 10.5" top length would be perfect

That's exactly what I do. Hold on 2 Mil hash. Get a precise zero then dial 2 Mil and confirm at distance.

NX8 is the perfect optic for a precise SBR.

Agreed. And some would say 10

Unfortunately that’s just the string I cherry picked while I was zeroing that day

No way M193 would have held that moa for 5-10 shots (at least with me on the trigger)

Pretty new to this mini recce topic. Is .300 blackout good for a mini recce in a 10.5 bbl? Seems like most 300 blackout rifles are set up with red dots. Can't find a whole lot of info on .300 blackout as a mini recce role or its capabilities outside of 100-200 yards. Wondering if putting serious glass on something within 200 yards is worth it.

Worth it is a personal opinion. My of us like the flatter trajectory of 5.56 over 300blk for the longer ranges of the recce stuff. Ymmv.

300BLK is a monster out to 500yd. I've taken it further but realistic accuracy on small plates is 500yd. It has a lot of energy at that distance.

I regularly shot subsonic out to 300yd.

300BLK is the perfect MR caliber.

Buy a Wilson 11.3 300BLk barrel. It's insanely accurate.

If your shooting 200 and in get a Steiner P4Xi. Great optic and perfect for 0-300yd.

Good to hear. I was reading earlier about holds and how 300 blk is not as flat as 556. I have a Noveske 10.5 upper in 300blk and trying to decide what optic to throw on it. Never messed around with LPVO's and wanted to turn it into a mini recce with a 1-6 or 1-8 but wasn't sure how far the 300 blk could stretch out to since everyone seems to consider it solely a close quarters gun.

Thanks, I like it but the trij is heavy. A NF 2.5-10x32 with RMR would be ideal, won’t hold my breath...

Details tip to butt:
YHM resonator
BA 12.5” 6.5G
PRI rifle length
HSP M600 body & mount w/ Malkoff E2HT
Streamlight TLR VIR
Trijicon 1-8x in a Larue 1.93”
WAR adjustable gas upper
Geissele - LPK, S3G, super 42 buffer and tube
LWRC stock

Still needs top mount RMR but might switch optic and mount.

RE: 300blk mini recce. I think your use and shooting style dictate caliber. 10.5” 300blk supers will get out there. Just learn your holds. I chose 6.5G since it does well out of a shorter barrel, ammo used to be cheap and it has enough energy for anything within the county (2 or 4 leg).

Distance is fun with the minis but I think it shines for PID. Verifying the neighbors dog from a coyote or a cell phone from a weapon could be helpful.

@Lonestar12 Since we're on the subject of mini mod H's... Went and picked up the AEM4 last night. It was black for about 10 minutes.

Heavily influenced by @Eyekahn 's old mini H. This one is finally (almost) done. Need to settle on a sling and a 2 stage trigger.

Never had a mk12 or NSW recce, but between this one and the mini NSW, I feel like the itch is scratched.

10.2" 300 blackout Noveske Johnny clone with the Schmidt and Bender Short Dot 1.1 - 4 is perfect for NC whitetail hunting. Getting within 100 yards is easy. Honestly, I don't plan to shoot beyond 50 yards hunting around here. It's stupid accurate with Barnes 110 grain bullets. John knew what he was doing; this rifle is a cheat code.

ETA: Thanks! @Outrider
@Omega9000 As suggested, the Steiner 1-4 would fill the role just as well if not better than the S&B. The old S&B is great glass, but size and weight take a hit and it's not a true 1 power. The previous gen Steiner px4 has an absolutely perfect reticle, to my eye anyway.

Thanks for the info.....funny thing with ferral hogs too....best round I've ever used to dump them is 55grn XM/M193 I've shot them square in the shoulder with a 150 grn SP .308 and had them run 100 yrds or more (all this at less mostly less than 100 yrds where I hunt)

Yeah I'm kind of influenced by John's rifle, except I went with 10.5. Looking at 1-8x since it's out there, don't want to limit myself to 4x. I'm thinking with 300 blk i'm good out to roughly 200 PBR and has enough energy behind it to slay most north american animals I might run into out in the woods. I'll keep the 10.5 556 with the RDS, the 10.5 blk as a mini recce, and guess i'll start building a 16'' 308 bolt gun for anything past 200 yrds. Boy this gets expensive quick lol

Build that 16" in 6.5CM. My 16" 6.5CM is my favorite rifle by far.

I should have been more detailed in my response. I think it was Nov 2019 from ADCO. My usual FFL's license was up for renewal so ADCO held it for about 3 months until he received his renewal. It took my FFL a while to get the application to me and it took me a while to finally mail it off to the ATF. Another 8 months went by and I had to correct the address on my finger print cards because we moved...6 weeks later it's here.

This is similar to where I ended up. I run my govt-profile 11.5 5.56 upper with a red dot and my 10.5 300blk match upper with a Delta Stryker 1-6 on top. I think LPVOs are great for 300blk because you can zero for supers and then quickly dial or hold for subs. It makes a quiet, accurate, and versatile 0-300-yard rifle.

And agree with above, 6.5CM all the way for the bolt gun.

Never had a mk12 or NSW recce, but between this one and the mini NSW, I feel like the itch is scratched.

Really nice.

What 2-stages are you considering? I currently have MBT-2s in my recce and mini-recce setups and an SSA-E in my SPR-ish build. The SSA-e is a little nicer for real precision work (like if you're aiming for consistent sub-half MOA at distance, it might help) but the MBT-2 is at least 85% there for less than half the cost. Perfect for a recce IMO. A G2S might fit the bill too.

Heavily influenced by @Eyekahn 's old mini H. This one is finally (almost) done. Need to settle on a sling and a 2 stage trigger.

For those of you running "Mini-NSW Recce's", are you running carbine or mid length gas? I have a Criterion 14.5 mid coming soon (hopefully) that Im thinking of chopping down for a FF Ras mid

Gas port sizing is going to matter more than if it's carbine or mid length.
I have a mid tube paired with a 13in. barrel / Rifle Length Ras.

You'll have some gas block poking out with a mid gassed barrel and Mid Ras set up. (Assuming your going for flush fit.)

Yep as the poster above said if you want the NSW look you have to go carbine for flush fit mini.

Mid length w/ spikes tapered gas block and medium ff Ras. Had to shave the rail a skosh to get the AEM5 to fit but she’s flush.

Just crossed the 200 day mark on an AEM3 for this rig. Have to send the barrel in to D. Wilson to to get chopped.

If you’re thinking about getting rid of the 1-8 I might be interested. Is it the Accupower or Credo and is it MOA or MIL?

I’m a huge fan of the j-arm.  Actually just sold an arisaka and plan on replacing it with another condition one j-arm.

@TBone556

It’s accupower 1-8 MIL. Got it on the EE in 2018ish, no box or anything. Never planned to sell so some surface wear, plus the reticle has small imperfection (at 12 o’clock) that only shows with illum reticle. Figured it wasn’t worth selling.

Have you contacted Trij about possible warranty work? I sent one of mine in because the trit was very dim. They recharged it, cleaned the internals, and fixed an issue with the reticle that I hadn't even noticed all for free. It was basically like getting a new scope again.

I have a couple MBT-2S. One in the AR-10 and one in the spare parts bin. I plan to sell the one in spare parts bin. Feels right in an AR-10, but it feels too, beefy I guess, to me, in an AR-15...something about the reset. I want another 2-stage Geissele for the mini H. Whatever I can find on sale.

It’s a good optic, I have the 1-8 VCOG and it has the new credo style reticle and I will say it’s an improvement over the older accupower. I rarely use the illumination when I crank up the magnification.
