World cup didn't help him at all.  Argentina never looks like a team always looks like 10 guys trying to set up Messi.  I think they would be better with out him because of that.

well, if you want to go there, how did the World Cup help Salah or Ronaldo?
Salah only played 2 games in the group stage, and Ronaldo's Portugal were out after the first game of the round of 16.  Ronaldo has yet to score in any WC knockout match.

as much of a LFC supporter and Salah fan that i am, the facts are that Messi won La Liga and the CdR -- and in the process scored a buttload of goals and piled up assists.

here is a mental exercise:

let's select pick-up teams from current players to conquer the world.

i get to pick first:  i pick Messi.

90% of the soccer fans in the world would start in exactly the same place, because Messi is STILL worth the first pick.
Neuer, Ramos, Modric, etc closely behind him, but for 90% of the folks watching the game, Messi is the first pick.

here's another mental exercise:

consider if Messi had chosen Spanish citizenship.

To be fair La Liga is not a very deep league. The Premiere League is more competitive

They’re talking during the Brazil USA friendly about how Bradley still has a role to play for the USMNT during any qualifying because he “has experience playing in the countries down south”.

THATS EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT BRUCE ARENA AND HOW DID THAT WORK OUT YOU FUCKS?

Just wanted to shout out to my boys on this boring international break weekend.  My U9's won their division last week.  I want to take this opportunity to encourage all my fellow football fanatics to get into coaching.  There is nothing more rewarding in the football realm then watching these boys grow in talent and confidence as years go by, and this is coming from a football fan and player.  Coaching blows it all away.  I've been with some of them 4 years already and it's great to grow close to the players and their families and be part of the journey.

The US has the worst player to certified coach ratio of any developed country.  We will never become a global power in the football world without this changing.

And a previous 3v3 tourney where I split the team in half and the boys finished 1st and 2nd for the day.

No doubt he belongs on the short list for player of the year.

Unfortunately for him people weight his national team performance.  Salah gets a pass because it's Egypt.  Ronaldo same thing to a much lesser degree. Also Ronaldo dragged Portugal to win Euros.

Ronaldo also in my opinion puts that team on his back and makes them alot better.  I like watching him with the national team I feel like he plays alot more for the team and less just to bag goals like he does in the club scene.  That's my problem with Ronaldo he makes everything about him, and Messi is alot better personality on the pitch.

Messi and Argentina is a mess.  Wasn't it rumored he more or less choose the team for the WC?  That was the explanation for no dibyala or icardi I can't remember which one got left out.

Everyone for Argentina seems to massively underperform.  Aguaro higuaini dimaria Messi the list goes on and on.  Is that his fault no, it sucks too as I'd love to have seen him win it in 2014 to cap off his career.  Poor bastard is arguably the best player ever but hasn't got silverware on the international stage like he deserves.

Since their FA is a cluster he probably should have taken the Diego Costa route and played for Spain.  Guys lived there since he was what 8. Plus they love to compare him to Maradonna which isn't fair.

Watching a program tonight on our local ABC affiliate called "Five Stripe Fever" about the Atlanta United phenomenon and youth soccer in Georgia. There are more than 100,000 kids playing youth soccer in Georgia, more than any other sport. But they also touched on the dearth of quality coaches for all of those kids.

Can't wait!

Messi scored one hell of a set piece goal already.

ETA:  Sturridge starting over Firmino.  Wonder if his eye is really okay or not.  Hendo also getting the nod over Keita.  Interesting to see Klopp shake up the line up now when he really hasn't done so in the EPL yet this season.

Yeah. Man has amazing control.

I too am curious about Hendo over Keita. Bobby may need a little time and Studge has made an impact in the pre season. It'll be interesting.

I mean, rotation is absolutely needed this month.  Too many games against tough teams too close together.

Nice jersey.  I need to get a new one.  My last Liverpool jersey, Carlsburg was still the main sponsor...it's been a while.

Bobby pulling Salah's ass out of the fire.  Another case of Klopp liking his starting 11 too much.  Sturridge and Salah should have been out at 60'.  All 3 middies had a phenomenal game.

Agreed. I'd have subbed on Bobby sooner, studge had a great game but he was lagging behind.

I have to give Klopp credit though. Hendo, Gini and Milner were absolute monsters.

Back four did great as well. Van Dijk got a bad bounce but Trent and Robertson had Neymar kept out of the game most of the night

Woah.  I saw your avatar and got confused about which sports thread I was in.    Have you been posting here all year and I'm just super unobservant?

Great, great win for Liverpool today, especially with Napoli and Red Star drawing in their game.  Really great to see them turn Neymar into a non factor and even cope with Mbappe's speed (as much as anyone can).

I don’t think I’ve posted in this thread. I am a Messi/Barca supporter first, a Liverpool supporter second, and a fan of good (read, European) soccer in general.

As far as the Messi/Ronaldo debate... I started watching Bein Sports to watch Ronaldo, but keep seeing this little dude from Barca who was simply mind blowing with his skill.

For me, Ronaldo is one of the top 5 (arguably top 3) players of all time. I’m blessed to have been able to see him play.

Messi? G.O.A.T. imho

The fact that I’ve been able to see them both play and follow their careers? Ridiculous.
