Update 2/8 Not a lot of photos today. We did get a lot done, but it was a short day and time flashed by. Kids were in a good mood and many spent time reading the newspaper article I posted up on the board. We had a very good time today, even though it was short. Vent going in...... https://i.imgur.com/ooNDINc.jpg We like where we are at with the turbines, and also got some base paint on inside. https://i.imgur.com/AG84RvO.jpg We've got a good plan on some details nside the turbines. Those pieces are about ready to paint. https://i.imgur.com/0H7mLkK.jpg Shock stack cover and landing gear cover also got close to finished. https://i.imgur.com/pUC2bzP.jpg View Quote |

I told the kids this means we did a good job because if it wasn't close, the little things wouldn't stick out so bad. |

So, a couple of weeks ago, I ended up spending the better part of a week hanging with some Aircraft Mechanics.
During one of our breaks, I pulled out my phone and started showing some of the guys pictures of your Blackhawk. I got some of the questions you're already used to by now, "This is a COLLEGE class, right?" etc. But the funniest one was when I was describing some of the efforts you were making to get it to look just right. One of the mechanics said, "Well, when it's flying, nobody will be able to see." That's when I realized he thought this was an R/C model. So, tell the kids at least one aircraft mechanic thinks she looks like she'll fly. |

We think either the motor wore out, or possibly a bad connection to the solar panel is the culprit. The other prop still runs. As for our helicopter, I realized early this morning about 3:30am, we for got to sculpt the bumps in front of the intakes. We had the stuff set out Friday, and a student selected, and I guess we forgot . We will have to address that before anymore paint goes on. Ooops. |

A DMM wile cure your problem fine, or without tools, swap motors and see if other one runs in place of the 'dead' one. That'd narrow it down to motor, controller or power. After that,if it's not 'motor', you'll need a DMM, but it's pretty straightforward. Should get an extra couple motors of each 'type' as they likely won't cataloged item in a couple years, so if still 'get'-able, they'll incude a $100 sur charge (that's how they fine people that use old design, energy efficient crappy junk they push, even though these exact motors were their "top motor' two years ago.. |

Short Friday will be a little less efficient today with out my swimmers and wrestlers who will all be at regionals.
Hopefully we can get more base coat down, and we can assign people to start scrutinizing close up photos for details. If you've got close-ups of either 101st Airborne Medevac, or Marine One Whitehawk choppers, post them up for us. We have very few close ups. We won't get every detail. It just isn't possible, but I tell the students the ore we get, the more believable it becomes, and the more people will ignore our flaws. |

It's just natural for people to discount what the outcome will be. I even see the look in faculty members here when I explain what we are making, and they've seen all the other projects in person. It does make the reveal more fun, looking at the faces of people when they see it for the first time in person. My wife only sees pictures most of the time and I see the same look in her face when she finally goes in to see it . |

For the long paint fade, tip: Set up a wooden railing along the fade line, back a bit, angled with it. Then the spray hand moves along the railing at a constant speed. That will give you a continuous smooth fade. Lower railing 3", move faster with trigger all the way back
Lower railing 3", move fast as possible with trigger halfway back. Substitute 3" with "2/3 fan height" depending on spraying method. Fade complete, professional level. No wobbly lines or 'drifts' of grey into green or inverse of that. |

For the plaque and letter, be sure to use cover glass with Extra UV blocking, seal the wood around the glass, put thin gasket around glass seat, go to metal shop, flush the area with as much nitrogen as possible while seating glass.
Or buy a frame with a valve and all that crap, the Enhanced UV full block glass is most important, nitrogen atmosphere would need to be renewed every few years, probably leading to it getting ripped, so maybe nix that idea, unless they want to install a discreet purge/fill valve. |

Alright ARFCOM, our printed model decals are not going to work. The color just isn't intense enough, and the decals are too fragile at this size.
I need a set of American Flag vinyl stickers that are close to 6"x9". Or! What does a vinyl sticker printer cost? |
