Thank you.   I'll let them know.   It will never be perfect.   We discussed this yesterday in class with a few students working on it.   The gloss paint is also very, very unforgiving when it comes to the surface showing imperfections.   Throw in compound angles and curves and, yeah, it's a 20footer.

I just tell the students to put on a set of scratched safety glasses and look at it again.

Update 2/27

We had to do a rework on one of the flags,  as we weren't happy with he way it laid out.  We also got the red cross attached to the sliding door.

We started cutting the access holes for the landing gear light mounts.

We think we might be able to use some 12V LED lights inside a Christmas bulb.  We are still playing around with design.

Our pilot got a bit of work done today.

After replacing the flag, we repainted, and added to the fade in several areas.

More little details added and the sliding door in place for a picture.

Tape and covers pulled after painting

I had them sand down a small bump that was showing up in the photo.   I think that is what you were looking at earlier.   The gloss made it looked even more  pronounced.

Update 2/28

Early update today.  I may not have time to do more this afternoon.

We began running the wiring for the lights, tail rotor, and main power today.

Our case for the Presidential letter is getting closer to done.

More details on the blackhawk side.

VERY Admirable that you thought ahead with all that nice conduit!   The shuttle or sub needing bulkheads drilled for added features took a bit and added some frustration.   I forgot which was the first one energized, sub I think.

If you have wire going to lights and such, might want to run 2 pair just in case something extra pops up.   The little housing for the white strobe would be a larger version of red/green markers, and the "can housing with lens" for landing light could also be created with heated plexiglass into shallow domes.  Like the train, but not dimmed or yellowish, just a 3W Cool Blue white LED.

Last little bit - write where each wire set goes on both ends with masking tape.    Like "BH Side", "M1 side", etc.   Saves you when you have a dozen red and white wires that get untwisted and you can't easily find which pairs are which, or where they are to/from.   Again, from personal experience, even at 10 drops of network, when they're all blue cables from conduit, anything helps if you don't want to run around with a Fox&Hound toner (or in your case, tugging).

Good suggestions.  We did the labeling on the space shuttle wires.  We will need to do that again.

While picking up reference papers off of the floor last night before heading home, I noticed we have missed several fins, antenna, and such on the tail of Marine One.  I'm going to find a couple students to start creating and attaching those.

I know it was posted somewhere once before, but if someone has a diagram with where and how many navigation lights go in a blackhawk, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure we can get them all, but we will give it a shot.

Does Marine One has A-A refueling probe?   If not, here's more detail of a tricked out one (w/refueling):
Either way, landing lights are shown VERY clearly just to the left of the Refueling probe in this photo. (also one on the right bright white, search light, if equipped is likely a small bub on bottom, not a giant police helicopter looking thing)

Most all of the below show a vertical antenna angled a bit toward port on the outside of the football.

I'll keep looking, but that last one shows well, white light on top of football at Twil Fin, seen from all angles.   Front searchlight, small pivot at bottom, not blatantly obvious.

Update 3/1

It's already March!

We began with working on navigation light housings, using plexiglass.
We might be able to make this work with a bit more trial and error.

The robotics work on the door, 3D printed and bearings installed.

Purple arms......

This is polymer clay that will harden with heat. We will paint at that point.

Labeling our wiring.

Fin on the tail beam.

We found photos of the step sticking out the front,  but can't find a good photo to show the same on Marine One.   Anyone know if it's the same?

Very cool work.   The two probes that stick up and out, then have a 3" spigot forward slightly behind, but to the rear of cockpit on either side are anemometer with pitot tube sensor side.

Roll this 180° to vertical, there's two because they can get clogged/iced over/malfunction.   Lets pilots know how fast they're going.

https://i.imgur.com/OfKCFTJ.jpg

How it works:

https://i.imgur.com/4Zq9zMU.jpg

For the plexiglass, look on eBay for a 60W ultrasonic knife, they magick themselves through plastic, plexi and about anything else with an essentially dull blade like magic, once in a while they'll have on eunder $50.   Same for ultrasonic welder, bit they have price tags on the near side of "that's insane".

When Writing tags for wires, many find it easier to get the tags ready for that area and wires expected to be there, put a date on em, then find that wire and wrap the label around it.  There are very cool little wire tag printers that do that excellent, but they're not a 'get one to goof around' level toy.

https://i.imgur.com/Brloq0l.png

Feeding is spendy, they use thick and long Dyno type label tape, but the "special tags" have enough clear good stickum  to attach to cable, so the label can have a lot on it and left out, or wrap enitrely around cable set.

IOW, tape labels are perfectly fine, but try to write what you can on them before attaching to cable, it's a pain to try do freehand writing while holding the bundle in other hand.   Any sort of label, however, is infinitely better than no label at all.    When you built it, remember to think "People are going to be trying to fix/enhance this in a year or three, if thi is the first time I was looking at  it, woul dthe functions be clear?".   The only Rule to follow is onl use Red/Black for power lines, you can get away with them being on motor drive lines, but Most all that look for the suppl are looking for Red (+5-18V) and Black (-/gnd) to check first for something broken.   If they're ALL Red and white wires, well that's how you get Very bad words, wishes,  hexes, and generally hate in your general direction. Sometimes by your past you yourself.   We all learn the hard way, if it works the first time, we're proficient and didnn't learn anything new.   Fixing problems learns people.

I haven't seen any, red is on left/port side, ,they may have a dark red to blak-ish lens for shining IR around, but they don't look red.   A defense system is that goofy lookingreddish yellow cylinider with a ton of little panes making it, that's on the bottom in one of the Marinen One photos, but that could have been the new Marine One, haven't seen it on other Marine One unless it's retractable.

Can you post a couple photos with Ugly Contrast ARF style circling and scribbling to it like a conspiracy theorist?

You guys are doing GREAT!   I see this as two projects, as your Mural has more pure work and win stuffed into it than the dragon ship, before the Helo!

Update 3/4

We had a few gone today, so work was a bit light.  We are continuing to concentrate on small details we missed; foot steps, rivet details, door handles, hinges, and other oddities.

We are working on the white trim line here.    A students parents pen a local body shop and have generously ordered the correct size pin striping for us.  We will hopefully get it on later this week.

I think the HMX-1 logo is all finished now.  More mural updates are still needed.

The frame case for the Presidentisl letter is almost finished.  We got the back hung up today.  We have a few more details to work out.

Robotics says we are close on the White House lights.  The housing is finished and the program is written.  Installation is later this week.

Window tint spray is here and we had a decent test.  Tomorrow we hope to do it for real and start getting some windows up.  We even discussed getting the bird in the air soon.  Much of what we have left can be done with it hanging, and may actually be better to do with it up in its final display.

Probanly not this week, but we will see.

The White House might look more finished if you cut out a base that is the exact same size as the building, but take it to the front of the curved staircases.  They look strange dangling, in thin air.  Plus it should protect them better.

There are still a few more little things we hope to hit on the windows before calling them finished.

That was definately a point of discussion.    The end argument was that having the base come all the way under the stairs would block the view of many of our details.

Artistically,  we kind of liked them hanging out in mid air.

Update 3/5

An exciting day with some nice advancements today.

We started with getting the Presidentisl letter encased on the wall.

We also installed some of the easy windows.  We needed a bit of touch up around the windows before adding some trim pinstripe.

Pinstripe on the front radar dome also was successful.

I'm going to break this up tonight as I'm on my phone and there are almost 20 photos.

The windows on the front quarter are going to be a challenge.   We have much to do to make them acceptable.

We are a little worried about direct sunlight causing the hot glue to release around the plexiglass, as it's under a bit of pressure to fit.  We are going to trim all the way around them,  add caulking, rivets, and paint.

The door windows also proved to be a bit of a pain, but we finally got them installed.

A door handle was sculpted out of PVC pipe and added.

At the end of the day we thought we were getting the electronics added to the White House, but we ended up having to table it till tomorrow.

Arduino encased in custom 3D printed case.

Finally, this was a fun surprise today.  Students started working on the light on top of the tail.

We began with a piece of oil funnel.

One of the more exciting things we do is find some object in the room to solve our problem.   Today it was a small plastic spray bottle.  A few students wanted s shot glass.

We also had a small marker lamp cover floating around.

The wiring floating inside is keeping it from being vertical, but you get the idea.

Might be for only when it's on the ground? Anti collision lights?

We didn't know if it should be lit or not, so we ran wire just in case.

Yeah, the red light on top of the tail should be the anti-collision light, there should also be a white tail light at the rear.

Quoted:  The White House might look more finished if you cut out a base that is the exact same size as the building, but take it to the front of the curved staircases.  They look strange dangling, in thin air.  Plus it should protect them better.
