Okay, The update for 3/6

First, let's talk about the good things about today, because up until about 2pm, it was a good day.

The White House lights and lightning are now active on the motion sensor.  It looks and works great.....but I didn't get any video.

Next, the collision lights are both done and ready for lights.

Next, the windows.  The spray tint is not going to work as well as we hoped.  The upper windows around the cockpit were going to just be plain, no tint, but a student suggested we try the iridescent paint we had left over.  A picture of Marine One in Switzerland with Trump getting off, clearly shows that type of reflection off of the glass.

We decided to test it again.  I wasn't impressed with an earlier test, but decided to see one more time.

After a couple coats.....

The results....students and I like it.

With some blending of contours, this wasn't looking bad.  We even got hinges on both sides.

Pinstripe around the windows looks good.

More paint and rivet sculpting looks good.

Finally......   the other god stuff.  Pretty successful day all around.....till the end.

Black bear looks good.
Base is coming together well, and we even finished the decorative trim later in the day.

Half a badger went together well......

Back when we were designing the transition, we noticed the blackhawk had a roughly 2 1/4" higher side cockpit window, compared to Marine One.  Unfortunately, we may have had the fuselage upside down during that portion of the framing. ........and we hadn't decided to make BOTH windows Marine One doors and windows.

So, somewhow, the Marine One side window ended up too short.  After that, the quarter windows, the hinges, the hood hinge line, and the A pillar are all off about 3/4".
The whole port side was not level with the starboard.

We even got some of the contouring on this side done.  We juse have to take off about 3/4" off of the window top.  This is easy, as we just cover over, but the rest is more work.

This 3/4" has to come off, and everything moves down.  We had a group discussion for about 20 min about the best course of action.  A match was a popular vote, but later they chose to cut off the top of the window ledge, instead of cutting out of the middle and lowering the window edge and hinges.

We think we have the quarter windows level now, as well as the side windows.

One request, Not sure the shop teacher will like it...

Red (or blue) velvet behind letter edges to fill out the area where extra wood around the router marks so they're hidden, sort of like a mat around a portrait, just an accent to keep subject up front and hide the support infrastructure (similar to dazzling with detail so a single thing can't be nitpicked).  It's fine to have it on left and right only as well, maybe 1/16" peeking from top/bottom, I dunno, you're the art teacher.

Sorry for disinfo on Red light, the whit flashes, red stays on.   My Bad, learn something new everyday, I don't know much about these machines that beat physics into compliance rather then gently apply shapes and beauty to glide through air.  I've only seen the white flashing strobe at a distance of the Life Flights that continually fly over my house.

No worries on the lights.

Probably not going to open the case back up anytime soon.  We sealed it pretty good.

The tint is a compromise.  We didn't want people looking up into the quarter windows and seeing the unfinished cockpit and pilots with such detail.  It's see through enough that you can still see in, especially with light coming down from above, but not enough to take away from the experience.

It's not ideal, but necessary.

The tint itself looks great and matches.  Usually it wraps around the bottom so they can see down when landing or hooking.

It does wrap around, down under, I think it's just the angle of the pictures.

Luckily we don't have many lines next to the window.  We will trim around them at the end with rivets.

We checked did check the bottom of the windows

Somehow we got the bottom corners lined up correctly.  When we went to install the windows we had them trimmed down with the Dremel cutting wheel.  I asked the student about that, because they should have been the same, but low and behold, the one window required about 3/4" more trimmed off.

It's funny how we missed so many hints along the way that there was a problem.  Kind of like the fuselage length.  The signs were there, but ignored until, it just couldn't be any longer.

Not one of those.  Those were trimmed off the top.

Now, one of the side windows, we might.  We went to put it on this afternoon, and it wasnt as good as the other.   We worked it over a bit but feel we still might salvage it on Monday with more shaping.

Update 3/7

The morning started off with trimming side windows.

Work to fix and move the hinges on the port side.

Window fitting and rivet trim around quarter windows.

Glued on and set.

Contouring ......

Trimmed side window and some paint on the hinges.  I'm happy with how those are coming out.

New video of motion activation.  Lights in the White House come on for 30 sec, and the lightning flashes randomly, then pauses for 10 seconds to reset.

LoL....   youtube keeps deleting the video.

Update 3/11

The day was spent mostly fitting the windows to their places.  We also wanted to clean up some of our window bends.  Our standards have risen a bit since we made them.

Most got to a point we can live with.  One student asked me a good question, will we regret this or that if 4 yrs when we look back at it?  Good way to look at it.

This one however is not great.  We could live with it had the other side not been so dang good. We spent a couple hours reworking this one and we just cant get all the imperfections out.  We are out of holographic paint, but I ordered another can tonight, and we are going to try to make a whole new window tomorrow.

Other details were cleaned up with paint.

Oh look.....another detail 3/4" off.

We discussed the door mount for the track today.  We've got directions from the robotic student about what he needs, so tomorrow we will lay out and cut the guide slot in the exterior.

Once the slot it cut we won't be too far away from hanging the helicopter and finish the details from there.  It won't be this week......probably, but we are not that far away.
Robotics also tested the LED bulbs I bought to replace the ones in my son's 4runner and they will work well.

Between the windows, get some mini MDF trim in black.  T-shaped curve to make the windows blend together like the real thing, or on a car, etc.

Along these lines, didn't look long for proper name:

That's a good idea, but the windows are cut to almost meet, with the wood lath under them for support.  I might look at some flat molding, but I'm worried the glue won't stick well to the plastic.

It would add a nicer blend.  I'll check the hardware store.  Not sure what size we need yet, probably about an inch wide for most of it.  At the top we will be adding a larger, probably 2" border.

We were at around $1200 for those.  The Baldwin went to about $1500?  I think.  Just a bit more.

The Monument and rest of the display busted our budget pretty good, but it was well worth it.
