I was gone this afternoon, so I'm not sure what the damage will be tomorrow.

We did discuss the vaunted whistle again today.  We are going to wire it up and install it, and have robotics test it to find out exactly how much power we need for the correct sound.  After that data is confirmed they will plan out the rest of the supply plan.

I did recruit one more painter to the murals (bribery works!) so there should be more progress than usual.

Update 2/27

The display box is coming along well.  The top is in production, and the metal is getting prepped for paint.

The first layer of dirt is on.  Tomorrow a little lighter paint, then some rust.

The murals are starting to get into the next gear.

Update 3/1

I'm greatful for students like this guy who comes in on his free hour to work on this project,  even though he is not currently enrolled in any of my classes.

Today was a fundraiser for a sick kiddo, and students were allowed to wear hats if they donated to the cause.

More weathering.  Some wheel details and more paint.

Update 3/2

The display case all taped and masked.  The top screwed and glued for the moment.

After some more paint.

The work for power on the whistle fan.

Some paint on the wheels, as well as some distressing, and some light airbrush work on the high points of bolts.

The glove box. The key to the locking lug nuts is always in the glove box of Miatas.
(Although I didn't think anyone in WY drove Miatas. Not enough ground clearance for snow bumps.)

Does this mean we're invited to the hanging?

Update 3/5

Work on the controls inside the cab.

More parts for cab control surfaces.

Tarnishing the brass......

Painting wheel axle covers.

The Unicorn now has company.   We needed the space and it was time to make the move.   We will display it out here for a bit while we finish up the details before the hanging.

Update 3/6

The cattle drive continues.....

Rocks are growing as more artists contribute.

We started the span of track today.

More tarnishing on the brass.  We intend to come back and hit some areas with some bright areas as well.

We even hit the bell with a little.

I know you're artists, and you want it to look good, but rust doesn't look like that.  It's ugly.  And runs downhill where it wants to.  So it's beautiful - but she's too beautiful.

Update 3/7

Our span of bridge track is stained top and bottom.   Next we will  fit the rails on top and test fit it onto one of the bridge ends.

The details on the inside of the cab are coming along nicely.

+$150 for suspension materials, and more lumber for the track

I think we may be getting close to everything we will need, as far as materials, but electronics and paint may add a bit more.

There was some discussion last week about the design.  I'm still working on finding a student to take up the job.

Hopefully, I'll have a volunteer soon to start the process.

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if there were an orange fire glow coming form the bottom of the firebox, or the firebox door where you throw in the wood.

3/7 Evening Update.

The patina is starting to get good, and some of the students are getting excited about how this is turning out.

Rust color being applied.

With the base rust on, oil paint is now being rubbed over some areas and faded out.

Keep in mind the majority of weathering on a locomotive should be the following...
Black soot on top, from the burnt wood
Black Grease on the moving Parts on the lower half
Light crushed sand that has been poured onto the rails and kicked up by the drivers
White streaks from places that leak Steam as the mineral deposits 10 to collect on those areas

For inspiration we clamored this together today to show possible tshirt designers where they might start.

Graphics students plan on helping us get rid of the background clutter.   As for unicorn horns on the riders steeds, many laughed at the idea.  Some don't want to mix the two projects.

We will see where all the designs go and see what is popular.

I think this may be too close to what we've done on the other designs.  I'm hoping we can mix up the composition a bit.
