Great shirt design. I'll be in for one for sure.
Just in case you need some inspiration for the whistle: Rule governing use of whistle is now 5.8.2, and the signals are as follows: (1) Succession of short sounds. "Use when an emergency exists, or persons or livestock are on the track. When crews on other trains hear the signal, they must stop until it is safe to proceed. (2) "-" (one long), When stopped: air brakes applied, pressure equalized. (3) "- -" (two longs): Release brakes. Proceed. (4) "o o" (two shorts): Acknowledgment of any signal not otherwise provided for. (5) "o o o" (three shorts): When stopped, back up. Acknowledgment of hand signal to back up. (6) "o o o o" (four shorts): Request for signal to be given or repeated if not understood. (7) "- o o o" (one long, three shorts): Flagman protect rear of train. (8) "o o o -" (three shorts, one long): Flagman protect front of train. (9) "- - - -" (four longs): Flagman may return from west or south. (10) "- - - - -" (five longs): Flagman may return from the east or north. (11) "- - o -" (two longs, a short and a long): [morse code 'Q'] Approaching public crossings at grade with engine in front, start signal not less than 1/4 mile before reaching crossing, if distance permits. If distance does not permit, start signal soon enough before the crossing to provide warning. Prolong or repeat signal until engine occupies the crossing. **Note: This is how the rule reads in the GCOR - Fourth Edition - April 2, 2000. Since that time a 'twenty second' clause has been added.** Use this signal to warn employes when; Approaching men or equipment on or near the track, regardless of any whistle prohibitions, or, view is obstructed. (12) "o -" (one short, one long): Inspect brake system for leaks or stiching brakes. |

Update 4/12
We have progress on the programming and Arduino. He's got everything wired back up and the Arduino mini working. He's got the whistle wired into the program, but he's got a small hiccup with it looping continuously. He thinks he can get it figured out by tomorrow. We should be active again tomorrow. The display rail is close to being finished. It needs more sanding. We should have a piece of tie ready to go under it tomorrow.

T-shirt fundraiser is now live! It closes April 25th. Cost is $19 plus shipping.
They are a little more expensive than the Unicorn shirts, but we are using 3 colors instead of 1. We need to sell 23 for the shirts to print. We have 58 students who have worked on the project and would like a t-shirt and agreed to pay for them themselves. The money raised by our fundraiser will help off set their costs of $15 each. Any other money above and beyond that will go towards offsetting the total cost of the project so far of $1200.00 Thank you ARFCOM for your generous support of our adventure.

I added the option to donate with out having to purchase a shirt if that is what you wish.

There are probably 87 reasons to donate to this campaign. The 2019 class working on the DeLorean must not have gotten the Arduino-Flux Capacitor interface working yet...obviously, more funds are needed. |

Update 4/13
Whistle is now programmed for two long pulse blows by pushing a button in the cab. Later it will be worked into the real time clock program. We may have a problem with how we sealed up part of our tubing. I feel like we are losing one of our 3 notes. Monday may lead to some disassembly and rework.  Panther Locomotive whistle button test |

We are playing around with our rail. We are trying to make the edge rolled over a bit. We may end up just using a real leave of rail in the end nut this is entertaining. [

My guess is that since all three notes and final pipes are fed from the same end source, a leak and lowering of pressure further up the line will make the lower notes more pronounced. If its like my trumpet I spent 15yrs playing, the lower notes take less pressure and the upper notes take more. As the whistle winds down after the fan is turned off I can hear all three notes end at different times. I heard a distinct change at one point in the testing yesterday. If a leak developed where I think it did, its going to take some skinny arms and patience to seal it off correctly.
