I just bought the manual for Kill Team yesterday.  Me and my buds from high school are going to meet up and play like the old days.
I think I'll go Deathwatch, and purge some xenos.

Best,

Yea I FO’d on the manual last night, should be here Tuesday. Been shooting texts to people I used to play with 10-15 years ago and almost everyone is super excited to dig out some old models and give it a try.

Seems that Papa Smurf is getting upgraded.  They jammed Calgar all sorts of full of new DNA goodies, he's a Primarus now.

GW is putting out a retro Noise Marine model for the holidays.  Not sure if it's a limited run or not.

New Warbringer Nemesis Titan “The Warbringer Nemesis Titan is a new class of god-machine armed with an artillery piece capable of transforming your chosen grid coordinates into a white-hot crater. This massive engine of destruction has been designed to look right at home alongside its brethren. It is our most detailed yet, with a crewed upper deck featuring a spotter, a loader and a massive, revolver-style loading mechanism for the main gun”

New Black Legion named character.  Haarken Worldclaimer.  Probably in the new Vigilus box set with Calgar as the promo photos have them near each other, like they were fighting.

That noise marine is glorious.

The genestealer cultists on dirt bikes are pretty cool, too:

Yep.  Still in the Index from when 8th first came out so they're still legal to use.  I was thinking about either doing some Riders of Rohan from the new LotR sculpts or converting some Scout Marine bikes to be my Riders but those dirt bikes are pretty fucking sweet.  Lord knows I have enough shit to keep me busy until those come out.

Yeah, there's some interesting stuff announced there.  The Vigilus campaign book being described as similar to the old Codex: Armageddon with themed forces sounds cool.  City fight letting you set up your own hive.  Chapter Approved having rules to customize your own warlord and leveling up units over the course of a campaign.  It all sounded good to me.

I think I may spring for the special edition Chapter Approved for the command point/victory point counters.

Well, I went ahead and FO'd on the warlord edition.  The VP/CP counters are cool, but I don't know if it's worth $75 for one.  However, GW screwed up and sent me two copies though I was only charged for one.  So at $75 for two it's a really good price.

Also, I ended up taking third in the local store's Kill Team campaign.  If I'd been able to get in more games, I probably could have swung the silver.  I'd have had to play a shit ton of games, and maintain my win percentages, to take gold.

I need a couple of ideas for a campaign I'm working on.  This will be at the ass-end of January when a group of us are renting a house for three nights.  Six guys breaking down like so: 1 Tau, 1 AdMech (me), 1 Necrons, 1 Ork, and 2 Space Marines (one guy is shooty Salamanders with a smaller Blood Angels detachment of Death Company jump packs, scouts and a Librarian dread, and the other guy is tank-heavy Iron Hands).

First night-first day is going to be Kill Team games fighting over territory on the old, out of print Planetary Empires set I've had sitting unopened for 5+ years (I think).  Everyone chooses a spaceport tile, then in turns each player chooses a tile and places a building on it.  After all the tiles have been claimed, we fight Kill Team battles, taking turns to be an attacker or defender.  If you win a battle defending one of your territories, that territory is marked with a color-coded flag.  If you lose, it's marked with a different color coded flag.  Rules have been written up for each building type to give two different benefits to later 40k games based on whether you lost or won as a defender on that tile.  For example, if you won as defender of your Shield Generator, you can once per game give a single unit a 3+ invulnerable save for one turn.  If you lost as defender for your Shield Generator, you can once per game give a unit a 5+ invulnerable save for one turn.

After the Kill Team phase of the campaign, before we move into regular 1-on-1 games of 40k, we're going to play two games of 2-on-1 games of 40k based on how many games were won during the Kill Team phase.  Players get a ranking of 1-6 with 1 being the highest scoring (i.e., most winning) player, and 6 being the lowest scoring (i.e. least winning) player.  Player 1 will face off with 1,800 pts against players 3 and 5 fielding a combined force of 1,200 and 600 pts respectively.  Player 2 will face off against players 4 and 6 with the same points breakdowns.  In each of these games, the 600 point players are going to pull all but the "Capture Objective X" cards from their decks.  Starting with turn 2, if the 600 point player has captured an objective for which they hold the card, they'll roll on a table.  I'd like for it to ideally have six outcomes, but currently only have 4 that I'm toying with.  What I've got so far is: 1.) "We've got what we came for" 600 pt player gets orders for a full retreat, leaving the 1,200 pt player on the field alone against the 1,800 pt player; 2.) "Assassin Clade" three assassins (one Vindicare, two Eversor because that's what I have minis for) are placed on the table under the command of the 600 point player with orders to eliminate all the characters on the 1,800 pt player's force starting with the Warlord; 3.) "Doomsday Device Activated" 600 point player randomly rolls three sets of pairs for Objective numbers (assuming 6 objectives), a line is drawn between the objective pairs, any unit under the line takes mortal wounds (I'm looking at 3d3 or 2d6); 4.) "Plague Zombie Attack" - 600 point player places a 10-man unit of plague zombies (I'm making them out of Cadian and WHFB zombie sprues) on two different objectives.  The plague zombies will have the same profile as Poxwalkers except they'll have a 4+ Disgustingly Resilient roll, and will always wound on a 3+.

Now, if you've braved this wall of text and are still here, I'd like two more events to add to that group for a total of six.  Any ideas?

The model itself is 100% 40k.  A horse being ridden into a battle involving tanks and giant robots, and the horse is wearing a fucking gas mask.  That is so 80's metal album cover that it can exist nowhere other than within the 40k universe.  The mini is absolutely awesome.

Thank you!

You want to know something funny? I don't even play the game. My son does right now currently he's on deployment as an active duty Marine, but he asks me to build some of his kits for him while he's gone. He's also gotten a few of his Marine buddies into it. I built some chaos Marines for one of his buddies. I built the Death Corps of Krieg because I really like that World War One feel. Now that doesn't mean that when he comes home on leave that maybe he and I'll play a few rounds and he can teach me about the game.

I decided to buy into LotR instead of AoS.  I have several friends that love AoS.  I just couldn't get into the look of all the models.  Being a ginormous Tolkien fan didn't help.  However, the rules for AoS seem tight and balanced and after they released the General's Handbook with the point costs, the game really took off.  When it first released GW didn't have any sort of point value mechanic and everyone hated it.

I'd say try to get a demo and see if you like it.

Manowar is one of two GW "side games" from the 90's I never got into (BFG was the other).  It was due to not having anyone around me interested in it.  I've always found the concept to be interesting and the minis had that 90's-era charm that I still really dig.

I also dig the 2000's era Warmaster game.  Epic-level fantasy land battles in a similar scale to Manowar.  The battle reports in White Dwarf were neat.

Yeah, I miss the overall vibe of WD from like 95-2005.  Lots of extra rules, it felt like they were still creating the worlds, and there was also a healthy dose of goofiness.  However, I'll say that the most recent WD with the Crimson Fists and AoS skirmish rules is more of a throwback to that than I've seen in a long time.

I'm glad that GeeDubs has turned a corner over the last few years and actually seems to give a damn about the fans who make things based on the GW properties...  From C&Ding Turn Signals on a Land Raider in 2010 (I think it was) to asking them to be part of Warhammer Community in 2018 is a pretty good jump.

Obligatory Matt Ward and CS Goto can suck it goes here.

I've had a lot of fun collecting the game and miniatures, particularly because it's all out of print - feel like I'm gathering GW artifacts.  I think at this point the easiest way to play the game is to collect all the rules and several fleets so that you could provide for your own opponent.  Fortunately it doesn't require a large number of models to play, and all the rules and supplemental materials can be found online and printed off.

I've had a lot of luck buying fleets from sellers on Facebook.  There are some on eBay but tend to be more expensive.  For the non-purists, proxy models at 1/1200ish scale from the age of exploration could be used for Empire, Bretonnian, Norse, etc fleets, or resin casts of the original fleets can also be found.

I'm actually not that deep.  I mostly read the fluff when I was in college because the omnibus editions were big and cheap.  I did hang out on some message boards though (which is where the Ward/Goto hate comes from) and the transformation that Games Workshop has made over the years from "Fuck the customer.  What are they gonna do?  Move to another game?" into what they've been doing since the whole Dark Imperium "reboot" (around the time of the May line in the attached graphic) has been some shit that needs to be taught in MBA classes.  It's fascinating.  They advanced the timeline, expanded the market by bringing back box set/self contained games, killed off moribund games for a reboot and actively went out and built a community with social media and outreach.
