Walmart plans to dramatically step back from gun sales after 'horrific' shootings

Walmart said Tuesday it will discontinue all sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition that can be used with military style weapons, discontinue sales of handgun ammunition and stop all handgun sales in Alaska, following two "horrific" shootings at Walmart stores this summer.

The biggest retailer in the world is also asking customers at Walmart and Sam's Club to no longer openly carry firearms in stores, in states where "open carry" is allowed, unless authorized law enforcement officers are present.

It said it won't be changing its policy for customers who have permits for concealed carry. And it will be adding signage to stores in the coming weeks to communicate the changes.

"We believe the opportunity for someone to misinterpret a situation, even in open carry states, could lead to tragic results," CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo distributed to employees on Tuesday. "We hope that everyone will understand the circumstances that led to this new policy and will respect the concerns of their fellow shoppers and our associates."

"We've also been listening to a lot of people inside and outside our company as we think about the role we can play in helping to make the country safer," he added. "It's clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable."

McMillon said he will also be sending letters to the White House and other Congressional leaders, asking for action on "common sense measures." He's calling on the government to "strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger."

"Congress and the administration should act," the CEO said.

Yes you should totally pay double price to support local shops.

If this is true I see a bunch of group buys being done in Kodiak soon or a bunch of rule breaking going on at the Coast Guard base.

Exactly. One of the big brick gun stores in my AO has no prices on the guns. Everything is MSRP and when you ask what the price is they throw out a number like they are doing you a favor. You never know what a gun is going to cost from 1 day to the next. Screw that.

Walmart (WMT) is proposing bold changes to its gun policy that will end sales of certain weapons, following a deadly mass shooting at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, and an incident days earlier at another location in Southaven, Mississippi.

The retail giant will keep its plans to end the sale of certain types of ammunition, exiting the handgun category completely, and asking shoppers not to carry firearms into its stores—even in open-carry states.

In a company-wide email, Walmart said it will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber. Those are commonly used in some hunting rifles, but can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons.

In addition, Walmart said it will completely exit the handgun category by ending the sale of handgun ammunition — including in Alaska, the last remaining state where they had been available.

“We know these decisions will inconvenience some of our customers, and we hope they will understand. As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same,” CEO Doug McMillon wrote in an email.

“Our remaining assortment will be even more focused on the needs of hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts,” he added. “It will include long barrel deer rifles and shotguns, much of the ammunition they require, as well as hunting and sporting accessories and apparel.”

Asking shoppers not to open carry

The CEO also “respectfully” requested that shoppers no longer openly carry firearms into the stores, even in states where the law permits them to do, so unless they are authorized law enforcement officers.

Since the El Paso shooting, McMillon noted that there have been “multiple incidents” of people trying to make a statement by testing the store’s response to openly carrying weapons. One instance inadvertently caused an evacuation.

“We believe the opportunity for someone to misinterpret a situation, even in open carry states, could lead to tragic results. We hope that everyone will understand the circumstances that led to this new policy and will respect the concerns of their fellow shoppers and our associates,” McMillon wrote.

Back in the day the outdoors section wasn't bad at all. I bought lots of fishing stuff, hunting gear, clothing, ammo and guns there.

Walmart screwed the pooch by slashing and burning that section. Oddly they did the same thing with their crafts/quilting stuff which I believe has given Joann Fabrics a huge boost over the past decade or so.

They've let some real idiots take over, and they forgot who their customers are.

Extrapolated from;

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based discounter said Tuesday it will stop selling short-barrel and handgun ammunition after it runs out of its current inventory. It will also discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking its complete exit from handguns and allowing it to focus on hunting rifles and related ammunition only.
