I hope a LOT of thought was put into determining if that renovation was necessary to sustain the building or not. Because the cost, assuming the an accident from the reno caused this, was evidently not worth it. Unless the building was going to collapse, they apparently had no business doing stuff to it. Given that like a quarter of younger people in France are Muslim, it's possible that a Muslim construction worker on the project could have done it on purpose. I'm cynical and lean towards this not being a mistake. It's a darn shame. I remember seeing it in person a few years ago. Such a cool building. Never got to go inside. It was also cool seeing French soldiers with Famas's. Their were groups marching around on patrols. It's unfortunate they've already imported their enemy and put'em on welfare. View Quote |

If some group was involved in burning it, they'll be on the Tweeter shortly. If you're a terrorist and you pull off something like this you issue a press release. You don't say "Darnit, Abdul Jamal, you were supposed to just scare them. Now get out there and apologize."

Fox News is hanging up on everyone they have on who mentions that there has been a rash of attacks on churches in France.
WE CAN'T SPECULATE! Do we think any of the relics will survive? |

Wow, any mention of the recent desecration or burning of French churches get you shut down by FOX and cut off post haste.

Fascinating how some here always want to believe the unlikely scenario over the overwhelmingly likely one in cases like these.
A fire started in the direct location where heavy construction was being performed. The fire is burning a building and property that is heavily secured with checkpoints, and searches of person, and property. Yet the likely cause for some is a terrorist or arsonist. |

That blows. I'm going to Paris next month. I guess I can cross that one off the list of places to visit.

Quoted: Hence my question a few pages up. I don't have a clue about public funded construction in France, but typically, a contractor has to provide a bond and add the property as an additionally insured on their policy. How much bonding capacity does a GC need to do a full on renovation scope to a national treasure like that? View Quote |

French fire chief just said they don't think the fire can be stopped. View Quote All the folks calling for air drops are insane. Helicopters are great for spot fire suppression, but a few hundred gallons of water would evaporate before it even hit the ground. You might as well piss on it. Airtankers are fairly rare, highly specialized, and need lots of support. If they are nearby it can still take hours to plan, fill, and fly them to wildfires. Dumping one in the middle of a crowded city could collapse structures and kill people. The best that can be hoped for is to keep the fire from spreading to other structures. |

Heavy security inside the cathedral. Unsecured scaffolding with probably no security outside. After hours when no ones working. Like another poster said, there's not a lot of welding or shit like that. All reports have the fire starting around 1840 local Paris time. |

Speculation, speculation, speculation. As someone else posted, Occam's razor comes into play here. We KNOW, just not just guessing, but KNOW, that the church was under renovation. Buildings do happen to catch fire due to accidents during renovations. So we have one fact supporting the "accident" theory. We have no facts supporting the ROP theory. Conclusion - we don't have enough info. But the endless posts blaming the ROPers doesn't do much except make us look like paranoid morons. Don't get me wrong, I have zero love for ROPers, and I'm not saying its not possible they didn't do this. But I'd like for at least SOME evidence before I point fingers. Wrong building. This one was the Provo Tabernacle, it is now an LDS temple. The building you are thinking of is a few blocks over and was remodeled into the Provo City Library. View Quote I'm sick about Notre Dame. Somebody said here that if this was set intentionally, this will be their 9/11 moment. Will they ever know conclusively?
