possibly a dumb question but do you have to disassemble the bayonet adapter to disassemble the shotgun or does it come off in one piece?

I ordered 2 folders, one for a friend and myself on Wed, order number 40786XX and they arrived today. We didn't even have to decide who gets the nice one as they both appeared to be unfired and pretty much brand new still wearing a coat of waxy preservative. No real flaws other than a few insignificant scratches.
Could not be happier. OP is def. Arfcom man of the year for the heads up!

My folder looks like the couple above.  Maybe shot, maybe just slight handling.  Very good condition with extension tube nut put on with pliers being about the only wear.  I'll post pics in the morning.

Yes it would have to come off. Make sure you’re using the exact right size screwdriver for this to avoid damaging it. Unfortunately the ONG kindof boogered mine up already.

And the folding stock guns are definitely more fun to look at then to shoot.  If you bought these to be shooters, the fixed stock guns make more sense for sure.  But the folding stock sure does look sweet.

I got the fixed stock. It's pretty nice but it's definitely nose heavy. That bayonet adapter puts a lot of weight up front.

Yeah, wasn’t a choice for me, sold out by the time I saw it. Still going to say, a folder would be a safe queen, the fixed will go to the range.

I used penetrating oil on the threaded side of screw and let it sit so the oil would run in to the threads.  Put it in a vise or clamp it down to a table. I used a SL6 screw bit, just make sure whatever tool that fits your screws  is hollow ground so you dont bugger screw heads-it would be really easy to do. After all 3 screws are out just pull adapter off from muzzle end. Sorry, i was replying to Minnesotadude.

As it turns out, I have a buddy who just happens to be on active duty with the Ohio 148th, and he called me after I sent him a picture of one of my shotguns. He said "I'm almost sure I handled that one as we were turning them in." They 870s only went to Vance's in September.

These 870s were Ohio owned, so were only used when the Guard was on state duty; they have a supply of Mossbergs that were provided by the DOD and carry these when used in Federal service. The folders came from Company C in Tiffin, and were in the original wood crates when he took delivery of them; he thought they may have been test-fired, but were otherwise in storage, likely since the mid-1970s.

My friend knew Vance's had the shotguns, but had no idea they were selling them so soon. He wanted to buy one, as the selling price was about what an Arfcom Gold membership costs, but was prohibited from doing so.

I thought some of you would be interested in knowing this information.

Picked up my guns today.

My folder shows almost zero wear.  It does have tape covering the ONG logo with 838th on it, which is an MP company.  It has the name "Casey" on the stock.

Would it affect the value to remove the tape? As it is, you can't see the ONG logo.  I don't know if having the company and soldiers name on it affects the value.

Mine has a few scratches here and there.  The quality was better than expected.  I would give it an 8/10.  I definitely am kicking myself for not getting two.

I have been in on some deals here on Arfcom.  This is by far the sweetest

Mine has a tag reading C 612th 2.  So I am assuming 2nd platoon of an MP company.  EDIT:  I was wrong.  It is an Engineer Company, and its C Company dates back to 1877. 612th Engineer BN C CO

They more than doubled in value before the first person who ordered one took possession of it.  Nobody is claiming these are going to be worth $3000 in a few years...but they will sell for $600-800 at a minimum.  Pretty easy to understand why folks are excited about getting them for $229-$239...

I think once some info on these particular guns is published it will increase their value and conductibility.
Give it some time, they haven't even all arrived yet.
Information and pictures draws interest. Their story just needs to be told.

I agree wholeheartedly...  Simply making the point that folks jumping on the opportunity to purchase a quality firearm with some rare parts for almost nothing is hardly hyping the situation.

On a side note, have you found a loaner if you're going to put something together on these?

ETA, better to sell it to someone else and just get a police trade 870 WM or 870 Police.

I'm wondering if the fixed stocks are going to be in generally worse shape than the folders.  Given how uncomfortable the folders are to shoot, might explain why so many look brand new and unfired.  Fingers crossed my fixed stock is just as pristine as some of y'alls!

Personally I haven't decided what to do with mine yet, I bought it to just be a beater to keep in the truck and was planning on ditching the bayonet mount but now I don't really know.  If i remove the bayonet mount I'll lose my front sight correct?

I know what you mean, I’m in the same boat.  I originally just bought mine to have one of the older built 870’s to use as a basis for one to modify.

I haven’t gotten mine yet...part of me is hoping for pristine, and part of me is hoping one is so beat I won’t mind modifying it.

Considering you can actual find 1897 Trench guns and M870 shotguns were non-existent before this sale I disagree.

Do I think these will equal or pass trench guns? No.

These are going to rise in value.

Only 1,200 of them with legitimate provenance as to being used during Hurricane Katrina and other events in America. Yes, they will rise. Plus the fact that these are general a rare configuration hardly ever released on the market and the majority are clones. Oh yes, they will rise.

I haven't posted on arfcom in years... this thread got me back on!

Mine came in yesterday.  Here are some more pictures: https://imgur.com/a/0eBhgiI

It had 838th written on some damaged masking tape (ONG Military Police presumably) and the dried sticky remnants of a name sticker on the folding stock.  It came with a USGI silent sling and no sling swivel. Instead, a piece of 550 cord was tied through the plastic pistol grip. The Serial number (S639100V) indicates production in 1968.  The date code on the barrel is EW, indicating September (E) and 1972 (W).  I assume this is a replacement barrel. The Remington stock is marked "Patent Pending" .  US Patent US3798819A with a priority date of 1972-03-09 and a publication date of 1974-03-26 seems to be the patent Remington took out on this folding stock set.  My assumption would be that this patent pending date would indicate production between 1972 and 1974 for the folding stock. I wonder whether these were sent back to Remington to be fitted with the new folding stock sets, new barrels and bayonet lugs in 1972?  See patent in subsequent photos.

There was only 1200 sold. That’s nothing. I’d say a lot of these went to people wanting to keep them rather than part them out. I’m sure we will see them get flipped on gunbroker a few times before they find their final home, but 1200 isn’t a lot.

the ONG thing is what makes them valuable.

Some of you are incredibly dense when it comes to collector value of firearms. There's already people offering double/triple the original price.
