Hate stories in video games.  Absolutely despise what video games have now become.   "Interactive media" is what they are now called and it's always some cheesy B movie type stuff.  If I want a good story I'll read a book or watch a classic film.   Video game should be just that....games!

I was just coming to say this.

Who the fuck wants a story line?  If you want a story line go take up lifetime movies or book reading.

Play the game.

I am wondering when more of these studios are going to capitalize on their talent and make real full length movies out of their games. Kind of like when fans weave together all of the cutscenes, but done by the creators.

Also, Tie Fighter.  Getting to see things from the side of the Empire was awesome...Really makes you hate the space hippy Jedi, and violent rebel scum.

It's a tie between the Witcher series and anything Obsidian/Black Isle studios.

Bioware is up there too but they haven't been as consistent.

Mass Effect series was fucking epic until you got to the end. All they had to do was a boss fight and then your guy running off into the stars with his spaceship and his girl. Instead it was a robot with red/green/blue.

And yes KOTOR was great.

Metro 2033 has a great story even if it doesn't really follow the books

Battlefield Bad Company 1

Red Dead Redemption

The Last of Us

I really liked the Killzone games and story

Black Flag is about the only AC game I loved

Resistance

The Saboteur was pretty great as well

Not sure if GD covered HOMEFRONT in the past but this seems plausible if FHRC would have won.

The Mass Effect series was great except for the ending.
The one I like most recently is Ghost Recon Wildlands, the dialogue between your team is amazing.
Some of the jokes they tell and just some of the comments they make had me laughing my ass off.
I got killed more times from laughing so hard I lost count.

I really liked the first Resistance game. The sequels went off the rails quickly, however.

Saboteur was more fun than it had any right to be. Assassin's Creed WWII.

Only Fallout nerds will know this one.

The mini story of Randall Clark, the Survivalist, from New Vegas' Honest Hearts DLC. You learn about him through terminal entries and holotapes. You never actually meet him. For some reason, his story always stuck with me over everything else in New Vegas.

Also, Season 1 of the Walking Dead telltale game. Was surprisingly good. Extremely good.

Sleeping Dogs

LA Noire

Mafia 2

That fallout story was great - there were so many great little stories thrown into those games it's hard to know where to start. The bent front sight on his rifle was a nice touch.  Some of fallouts greatest moments were comedy - the nuka cola quests in fallout 3 for one.  Not epic but fun.

The thieves guild arc from oblivion was pretty epic.

Half life is the greatest unfinished story in gaming and gabe newell deserves to be strung up by his balls for letting it die.

Modern warfare was a hell of a ride and extremely satisfying in it's conclusion.  Sitting down and lighting a smoke...

I don't know about "best" but one of the more memorable scenes for me was having to stand and watch as Jenny was murdered in The Darkness. That was a pretty brutal scene at the time.

The first three minutes of the game were some of the hardest, most gut-wrenching, emotionally painful to get through. I mean it in a good way. By the end of the opening credits you'll want to hug your kids. Hell, I wanted to have kids just to hug them.

That story hits you right in the feels.

It's also one of the reasons why New Vegas was better than Fallout 4.

Are you guys joking? C'mon, you have to be... right?

The Metal Gear Solid story arc is the best example of laughably incomprehensible storytelling that I've ever encountered in a game. (Probably in books or movies as well.)

I mean, one of the things the series is famous for is its ridiculously convoluted plot.

Every character in the game is named Boss or Snake, for Christ's sake.

I'd buy the shit out of a 20th century AC game with actual gunplay

I did mean Fall of Man for Resistance 2 had arguably better gameplay but pretty meh story. I pretend 3 doesn't exist

There are some really good games already posted I'm the thread; Deus Ex, COD4, all the little pieces of environmental story telling in the Fallout series, etc...

The Last of Us... amazing. Will go down as The Godfather or Jaws of gaming.
I enjoy anything from Rockstar... hell your character never said a word in GTA 3 and I still loved it.
Portal 2 was enjoyable
Uncharted franchise has been spectacular. Wasn’t so hot with that last one.

You know what else had a pretty good story?  Soma. Released in 2015.

It took place in an under water environment a lot like bioshock and revolved around the question of is a synthetic being that is sentient "human", does it have the same rights etc.  Involved some interesting decisions left up to the player.

Final fantasy 6 (3 on snes).

Building up a huge story line and world, then nuking the whole world and sending you around to figure it out blew me away as a 12 year old. Been into gaming for a while and it took  me a week or two to get over it.
