We’re any of the 25 Porsche 917s that were “built” in 1969 ever offered for sale?

Quoted: My favorite part of the LeMans 66 movie was absolutely no mention that it was just a Lola that had already been developed and raced. The car just appears out of nowhere like Shelby drew it up in a weekend and some guys in Detroit put it together. View Quote Nah, they mentioned that it was a basket case... |

Quoted: To race in the GT class at Le Mans you had to build 25 street cars. In 1966 Ford built 31 Mk1 GT40s for the street and 7 were for dealers. OP is more right than I was expecting.
Long time ago I convinced a car salesman to let me sit in a GT sitting in the showroom at a local Ford dealership. He knew I was gonna buy a new truck. Didn't buy the truck, and a week later the GT was stolen out of the showroom in a late night theft. Thieves only made it about 5 miles, as I recall, before they wrecked it and fled. Even the GT was awesome, I can't imagine a real deal GT40 today. |

One of the cars I would buy if I had fuck you money.
The other is a Shelby Daytona. |

Today the OP got it right. I would put a 959 in the mix as well.

Quoted: OP, what’s the difference between a street car and a dealer car? Was the dealer car not able to be licensed for use on the road? View Quote My understanding is most were sold directly by Ford to an end user and the other 7 went to dealers. I have no idea who the dealers were. The one that Jim Click has been through several hands even though he is a Ford dealer. All of them were street legal. |

Racing regulations ruined things. NASCAR, rally, LeMans, JGTC, and probably a bunch more. When they had to be built on real cars the consumer benefited greatly.

Watch videos. Note how those vertical stabilizers limit oversteer at speed. One could dial in as much steering force as the front tires could take without the back end coming around. The winged cars were balls out. They represented how to make a large car go fast and turn without regard to how stupid it looks. I have deep respect for the aero tech, but I don't like the winged cars' looks. The Torinos are infinitely better looking cars. |

Quoted: We’re any of the 25 Porsche 917s that were “built” in 1969 ever offered for sale? View Quote I don’t think so but there have been street legal versions. The famous one is #030 that Count Rossi (think Martini and Rossi) had made street legal. If I remember correctly his first attempt failed and then he sent it to the US to get titled and registered then brought it back to Europe. |
