The "third straw" is at 860 feet, which is low enough to draw water from Lake Mead at elevations as low as 1,000 feet.
If the lake level falls below 1,050 feet the first intake, or "first straw", would no longer be usable.
The second intake, or "second straw", would be usable until the lake level falls to about 1,000 feet.
The primary objective for the "third straw" is to preserve the existing water intake capacity should the lake level fall below the 1,050 foot elevation of the first intake.

Dead pool is at 895 feet, at that point there will be 3 million AF in storage that can't get past the dam.

As for the third intake, the Low Lake Level Pump Station attached to the "third straw" is operational.

Most likely California will get it's hand forced with respect to conservation, Arizona is just starting to make the effort, so they may not get hit as hard.

Nevada has written the book on water conservation, the fed .gov stepping in likely won't focus on Nevada because it's allocation is already so small compared to the other lower basin states.

We should harness the glorious power of melting glaciers. '

Build a glacier water pipeline from Alaska, through Canada and in to the US.

And then pump sweet Alaskan and Canadian oil through it instead.

Poorly worded on my part, but I mean add up the congresscritters in total.

Nevada has 6, with 2 senators and 4 reps.

California has 55, with 53+2.

Should be easy to dive now, at least far easier than when the lake was full and it was a more technical dive.

73 feet should be much different than ~250 feet

So I have a question, does power output go down as it gets
Closer and closer to swap pool? I’m not a expert on this type of power generation (no expert on any power generation but I’m very familiar with a couple near where I live on the Columbia) like I said I’m not familiar with this type of dam where the turbines and not directly located in and below the dam. It would seem to me though with less less of a head there would not be the ability to turn the turbines as efficiently as with a fuller pool.

Yes the original turbines would be out of power head by now, apparently they replaced some of the turbines to be efficient with a lower head gradient and they will be able to produce some power until they can't let water through the dam.

Nevada makes more power from natural gas plants north of Vegas than the Dam ever produced.

ETA: Hoover Dam nameplate capacity of about 2,080 megawatts

In Garnet Valley:

Chuck Lenzie : 1,102 MW
Harry Allen : 628 MW
Apex Generating Station : 600 MW
SilverHawk : 585 MW

Total 2,915 MW vs 2,080 MW

Phoenix, AZ is the only logical place to live.  No earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, or catastrophic floods.  Just constant drought.  And occasional thunderstorms.  Sometimes hail.
