I grew up on the central plains of Oahu. Went to missionary school in Wahiawa near the Dole fields. We used to vacation in Lahaina because our family lived on the east coast and it was too far to go unless for a really big trip
I got my ass kicked for being a haole, sure I also had great friends and knew wonderful people Know what? Years later I lived in Savannah, GA. And because I wasn’t “from” Savannah I would never be truly accepted by a fair amount of people there too As with many places, there are assholes and there are amazing people My wife and I are trying to move to the Kailua/Malakai area sometime in the next 3 years. We go back every year (she grew up there too). I can’t wait to retire there Regardless. No one deserves what has happened to the people of Maui. And I’m ashamed people here feel that way |

People are loading up skis, boats, and planes on their down dime to get fuel, food, and water to people over there.
As the search continued, people who stayed behind in West Maui said they heard little directly from the government and did not know what forms of official aid were available. "Nobody knows what's going on out here," said Cord Cuniberti, who was driving Spam to a drop-off site with his friend. "We're just relaying stuff coconut wireless," he said, using a local term meaning word of mouth and rumors. In Napili Park, north of Lahaina, locals set up one of many makeshift distribution centers under a canopy. They handed out mounds of canned goods, pallets of water, diapers and other supplies to those in need. People stretched out to rest on blankets in the shade as children played football and helped to unload boxes of goods. Asked a friend in Kihei for donation recommendations. This is what they said.
Google their website for links if your so inclined. ETA: Mods, if this isn't allowed please delete. Places to donate info, if you are looking: King’s Cathedral (777 Maui Veterans Highway, Kahului, HI 96732) Hope Chapel (300 E Welakahao Rd, Kihei, HI 96753) Maui Food Bank (760 Kolu Street, Wailuku, HI 96793-1438) These two churches are good donation options. King’s Cathedral has set up a shelter in their church building and is currently helping many from Lahaina and also tourist stuck here that need to get home. They have teamed up with Costco to get donations to the victims of the wildfires. Hope Chapel in Kihei is getting set up to help victims of the Lahaina fire. They are a good donation. Maui Food Bank also teams up with Costco. The Maui Food Bank from what I have heard is Costco’s biggest buyer and the food bank’s dollar goes further than an individual’s dollars. Thanks for asking, all help is appreciated View Quote This thread has made me regret past comments I've made about CA natural disasters. A lot of members need a little self refection. After talking with my friend, There IS looting happening and not much being done to stop it. Also told that only 3% of the burned area has been checked with cadaver dogs - they found 30 more bodies this morning.
He's trying to find security to keep watch over his place. Some friends are close by, but can't get to his place yet. Does anyone know if the water treatment plant is online? Is there water to the surviving homes? |

View Quote I was browsing around r/maui and they still have roads blocked which is frustrating for people trying to help my trucking in loads of supplies from the east side but controlling entry is a necessary thing now IMO. They are still looking for deceased people, too, so people wandering around isn't something recovery crews need to deal with. As morbid as this sounds some remains are going to have to be identified by DNA matches with relatives. Something to consider for people who are still missing family members. From what I can tell that the whole impacted area is without safe running water. I saw roads mentioned where water is safe to drink in some random comments but that information may be available on websites for local gov's over there. |

Residents need help now. investors and corporations may sell, scared and desperate locals will too for the quck buck. The liberal eco nuts will make it hell to redevelop.
